I know that if I over clock the 8600m gt on my vostro 1500, I will be voiding my warranty.

But my question is, how would Dell know? Is there some way they can check the firmware and find out? Or as long as I return the card to normal clock am I good?

Also side question: Does anyone think it will ever be possible to upgrade the card in the Vostro 1500, or is it a slim to none chance?

    Best Wishes,
    Kyle

you can upgrade to 8600m gt from a 8400m gs... but since you have the 8600 thats the highest model dell offers now for the vostro 1500/inspiron 1520, if dell releases new cards it might be upgradeable cus its not soldered

Dells unlikely to release a better card than the discrete 8600GT for the Vostro and Inspiron lines. The newer models are going for "Thin" and "streamlined" which means less room for discrete cards with the GPU soldered onto the motherboard.

So how about the over clocking question? is there a way for dell to be able to tell you've over clocked your card?

It would be possible, but it is unlikely.

Normally, they have you remove your hard drive before you ship on mail in service.

It is unlikely that a tech would take the time to check your system to see if you were overclocking.

You can always come clean and let Dell void your warranty though!
