    The only solution to fixing the touchpad is to nuke the entire hard drive? :confused: Say it ain't so...

    How exactly did you clone? Backup and Recovery rescue media creation on the SSD and then just restore from SSD? Doesn't that option require another external drive while restoring and destroy the bootable media in the process?

    Today, replaced the stock SK Hynix 4GB DDR3 stick with a Crucial 8GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory, 1.35v. Be very careful when working inside the case, first off, i noticed some screws missing and the ribbon cable that connects the keyboard is very delicate. Here is a pic with the basic layout.

    1 = KEYBOARD RIBBON CABLE
    2 = LAPTOP HARD DRIVE
    3 = BATTERY
    4 = COOLING FAN
    5 = 8 GB DDR3 MEMORY
    6 = HINGE BRACKETS
    7 = CMOS BATTERY

    Does anyone's 3147 get hot? I use it while sitting on my lap and though at first the heat didn't bother me, but now it seems irritating. I upgraded the machine to Crucial Ballistix 8GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory, 1.35v and a 250 EVO SSD, I check the temps with HWMonitor and the hottest I've seen anything get to is 67 degrees Celsius. Everything is normally in the high 50s.

    And has anyone done a thermal re paste? I do have some IC Diamond laying around. Not sure if it would make a difference.

    And does anyone else have issues with getting the bottom cover flush when putting back on (by the power button)?

    It gets hot at the back near the vent. I think there is a heat sink and sink conducting strip that leads to the fan.

    I first made the recovery USB stick, and then used Symantec Ghost to create a disk image to an external USB HD. After restored the disk image from the external HD to the SSD, I had to boot off the recovery USB stick to do a repair to get the SSD to boot properly.

    Don't have this, but the XPS 12 was the same way. And the design was more delicate than the standard one and that inner piece broke. Raised a big stink. You have a $1200 premium product and they try to reinvent the wheel and take multiple steps backwards while other premium products get magnetic connectors and pretty much called their products a joke and this was my last Dell purchase and I'd be selling it as soon as it was fixed. Haven't looked back. Though picking up one of these cheap as a beater is tempting. I now have a 14" Sony Flip and a $10 clearanced Innocell car charger from Radio Shack that works like a dream in the car with a spare USB to boot. And my Dell car chargers are useless. Using them to sweeten the deal in selling my 11Z.

    This would also give me an 8.1 key so I don't have to "illegally" download a copy of 8.1 so I can restore my 8.1 upgraded from 8 laptop. So ridiculous Windows 8 keys are incompatible with 8.1.

    Yes, to crackling speakers! Driving me crazy! I have had the speaker and motherboard replaced under warranty and it is still doing it! At this point, I'm thinking it has to be a software/driver issue. Perhaps something with the speaker profile software? If anyone has a fix, please let me know. I'm sure Dell will still be scratching their heads when I report back my latest findings...

    I actually put a Samsung EVO 840 512GB SSD and cloned the drive with no problems. This is my primary laptop that I use while out on the road. Very cool and very nice.

    How did you get the screen to lock with Windows 10, the Free Fall Sensor Driver wouldn't install for me under Windows 10.

    On a side note, last night while flipping channels, HSN was premiering the Dell 3147 laptop, the same laptop that sells at Dell.com for $399.99, they were trying to sell it for $599.99. What was even funnier, HSN said they are the only one selling this laptop, it was exclusive to them. I guess HSN doesn't know it has been out for a few months already and sold at retail stores as well. Watch the video for a good laugh.

    That's pretty funny. HSN seems to be pretty dodgy in general. One of my hobbies is watches, and I've noticed that HSN sells a lot of overpriced watches with very questionable sales pitches. And, by questionable, I mean they just flat-out lie sometimes.

    Laptop-related story: So, I use this machine as the media center for my stereo. The class D amp pulls the music straight from the ssd and bypasses the laptop's decoding for a slightly crisper sound. It's a shame iTunes works so terribly with a touchscreen, but otherwise it's great. I was disappointed to discover, though, that I was getting static on the right speaker when I changed the volume, and sometimes it sounded like that speaker sounded a little thin, like it wasn't getting everything. I figured it was probably just the wiring to the amp, and I was gonna re-wire that speaker when I got around to it. Then one day I poked the screen extra hard for something and the amp actually cut out for a moment. That's when I realized that the usb cable plugged into the laptop was a bit loose. I was using the usb 3 port, so I switched to the usb 2 next to it. Suddenly, static with volume change on the right speaker is gone, and so is the thin sound. Plug it back into usb 3, problem comes back. Huh. I'm a little surprised a wonky usb connection could have that effect, but switching ports demonstrates it pretty conclusively.

    The usb 3 port definitely works otherwise -- I use it with a thumb drive to put music on the machine. But, the connection is definitely looser and "floppier" than with the usb 2 ports. I popped the back just in case there was anything I could perhaps tighten, but (as expected) the usb ports are straight on the mb, with nothing to tighten

    tl;dr: Anyone else find that the usb 3 port is a bit loose? I suppose I could do Dell warranty, but it hardly seems worth it, and I suspect a replacement mb would be the same. I'm mostly just curious if anyone else has noticed a problem.

    I created a Macrium Rescue disk and am trying to clone a factory fresh 500GB to a 120GB SSD. The 500GB drive is less than 120GB filled but Macrium is not letting me clone the disk due to the different size. I have tried the free and professional version. I could make an image on a larger hard drive but when restoring it to the smaller SSD the same might happen.

    Is there an option in Macrium to force it to clone to a different size disk by not cloning the unused space?

    Created a bootup disk with Miray HD Clone. On another laptop it works fine.

    On the Inspiron 3147, it starts to boot ("Starting Miray Symobi") but then gives a black screen with nothing more. Any ideas what may be causing this?

    How are you guys doing a clean install. You suggest that over cloning the drive to SSD?

    Update: used Miray HD Clone, had to shrink the partition to make it smaller than my SSD, then copy.

    I clone to SSD drive, but touchpad isn't working.

    Update: Weird, cloning requires drivers reinstalled. End up using the recovery dvd for clean install.

    take a look at http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...-guide-m18xr2-alienware-18-a.html#post9789851

    although i downloaded that driver, don't see any devices in device manager that i need it to apply to..what could i be missing..

    screen does not rotate for me on windows 10.. is it because continuum is still not released in technical preview?

    I'd like to share my experience on touchpad issues and migration to SSD. My PC is Insprion 3147 upgraded to Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB.

    SSD migration: I did a hard disk clone using Paragon Harddisk Manager. Then the system won't reboot. After repaired boot record using bootrec and rebuilt EFI partition using bcdboot, the Win 8.1 system still cannot startup. Then I find this link
    Operating system comes up with Blue Screen Error: Stop c000021a - Ask the Core Team - Site Home - TechNet Blogs
    Basically this link turns on automount in Win 8.1 so it can rescan the hard disk. Following this link issue resolved.

    Then I come up with the touchpad issue. Basically Win 8.1 recognize my touchpad as PS/2 compatible mouse, and no matter how many times I installed the driver from Dell support pager, it cannot recognize it. Manually changing it to Dell Touchpad resulted in not working device. Then I visited this website and I installed driver from 3137 support page, it worked!

    Hope anyone encountering these problems will find these lines useful

    Yes, even with a fresh install using MSDN Win 8.1 (with Update 1) media, I also get "PS/2 Mouse". I also tried older bios (A00/A01/A02), no effect. I've found several Dell Touchpad drivers that will install (look at the 3148 drivers too), but you want to check 2 things:

    a) Can you disable the touchpad in "Mobility Center"?

    b) Does the touchpad automatically disable in "tablet mode"?

    I'm stuck on the "tablet mode" problem. It's always on whether in laptop mode or folded over in tablet mode.

    I'll edit this post if I find any fixes.

    UPDATE: See post 185 (below) for solutions...

    are you saying 3137 touchpad drivers allow the touchpad to be disabled on tablet mode? For me 3137 did install but tablet mode still does not disable.

    My experience with W 10 preview build 9879 was pretty smooth (Installed on a Samsung EVO SSD):

    Followed Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 (upto step 3) from post #93 of this thread and it was pretty smooth.

    At this point all devices are recognized and proper drivers were installed and did not find any unrecognized devices in device manager, so I did not proceed any further.Too, the keyboard/touchpad was getting locked in 'tablet' mode.

    NOTE: The screen rotation is not working yet. Upon researching, it *seems* to be related to continuum feature that is not released in the tech preview builds yet. Consumer builds may have it...

    A solution for those with non-locking/disabling Touchpads...

    Comments/suggestions/improvements are welcome.

    The core issue is the driver for device "ACPI\80860F41". You need "I2C Controller" but the Dell/Intel Chipset drivers (9.4.4.1006) "cover up" / install a driver for this device that does not implement the protocol needed for "Mice -> HID Compatible Mouse" which is required for the "Synaptics HID Device" driver which is required for the Dell Quickset app to auto-enable/disable the touchpad in "tablet mode".

    I have several ways to fix and the USUAL DISCLAIMERS apply (not claiming it's perfect or i'm an "expert" or i've done extensive testing, etc, etc, etc). YMMV

    Here is the "I2C Controller" driver (isolated from PDQ8's driver pack, many thanks for that) View attachment I2C Controller.zip . Download and extract to your "Drivers" folder (I use "C:\Drivers").

    There are 2 paths to follow: " existing" installs and " clean" installs...

    For "existing" installs:
    (especially those who purchased from Dell Outlet who is apparently using a flawed Win8.1 image)...
    1) Uninstall Dell Quickset (may not be required but good practice)
    2) Uninstall Dell\Synaptics Touchpad driver (required)
    3) Reboot
    4) Under "Device Manager->Mice and Other Pointing Devices", you should have just "PS/2 Compatible Mouse"
    5) Open the folder where you extracted the "I2C Controller" driver. Right-click on file "oem62.inf" and choose "Install". The driver is installed (appears in Device Manager->System)
    6) Device Manager->Mice should now have 2 entries including "HID-compliant mouse"
    7) Install the Dell/Synaptics touchpad driver (I'm using the 3147 v18.1.2.9 driver but others also work)
    8) Reboot
    9) Install Dell Quickset
    -> SKIP TO TEST <-

    For "clean" installs:
    (those who are installing fresh from Microsoft or Dell Windows 8.1 media)

    Here's what my 3147 looked like after a clean install of Windows 8.1 (with Update 1)...
    CleanDM.jpg

    It's the 2nd "Unknown Device" that's the problem ("ACPI\80860F41"). When this device has the proper "I2C Controller" driver, it will create the "HID-compliant mouse" device (Device Manager->Mice and Other...).

    If using the Dell/Intel 9.4.4 chipset drivers:
    1) Manually install the "I2C Controller" driver (from the folder where you extracted the "I2C Controller driver, right-click file "oem62.inf" file and choose "Install").
    2) Install the Dell/Intel chipset drivers
    SKIP to #3

    If using the Lenovo/Intel 10.0.14 chipset drivers:
    1) Install chipset drivers
    2) In Device Manager, you'll see 2 "Other devices" with a yellow exclamation that "need drivers". The chipset driver "identified" the device but DID NOT install a driver. Find the one saying "Intel Atom ... Serial IO (SIO) - I2C Port 1" and manually update the driver using the "I2C Controller" folder from your Drivers folder (OR just manually install the "I2C Controller" driver by right-clicking the "oem62.inf" file and choosing "Install").

    3) Install the other drivers. Here's the sequence I used (ymmv):
    - Intel Trusted Execution Engine
    - Airplane Mode Switch
    - Realtek Card Reader
    - ST Free Fall Sensor
    - Intel HD Graphics
    - Network
    - Realtek Audio Driver
    - Synaptics Input/Touchpad
    - Quickset

    TEST: Make sure that...
    - the Touchpad works
    - "Device Manager->Mice and other..." shows 2 devices: "Dell Touchpad" and "PS/2 Compatible Mouse"
    CleanDM2.jpg
    - the Touchpad icon is displayed in System Tray (bottom right)
    - the Touchpad can be enabled/disabled in "Mobility Center"
    - the Touchpad and keyboard are "auto-disabled" in "tablet mode" (folded over)

    LINKS:
    - Attached "I2C Controller" driver View attachment I2C Controller.zip
    - Lenovo/Intel "Bay Trail" Chipset drivers 10.0.14 (newer than Dell)
    - Dell 3147 Touchpad 18.1.2.9 driver
    - Dell 3148 Quickset (slightly newer)
    - Some amusing Touchpad Apps from Synaptics

    TIPS:
    - Quick way to "Device Manager" (and other stuff), "Windows Key->X" (press together) then "M"
    - If you've installed/uninstalled all kinds of drivers multiple times, you may have trouble installing the Touchpad driver. My recommendation is to "start over" (restore/recover your factory Dell Windows or do a "clean" install).

    BTW, if you're looking for someone to do this for you (or other hardware/software upgrades), please send me a PM (private message) and I'll try to help.

    Big thanks PDSway... :thumbsup:

    I will try this later. While I don't use the notebook in tablet mode often, I still feel that it is a flaw that needs to be taken cared of.

    PDSway, that worked perfectly. After clean installing 8.1 on an SSD, I was having all sorts of battles with touchpad drivers. I had a combination that worked fine albeit the locking in tablet mode. Now I've got everything working 100%.

    PDSway worked, well at first it didn't work. Then I went ahead and used Dell 3147 Touchpad 18.1.2.9 driver installed ( i either installed it twice or installed an earlier version).... got bluescreen of death!. After reboot, bam it worked! Touchpad now locks!

    My Dell 11-3147 Power Options on battery are set to "Turn off the Display" after 15 minutes and to "Put the computer to Sleep" after 30 minutes.

    Pressing a key on the keyboard or touching the touchpad easily restores the display before the computer goes to sleep. However, after the computer goes to Sleep, only the Power Button will wake it from sleep.

    Is my 11-3147 operating correctly, or does the wake-up process sound like the PC is defective or a setting is wrong?

    Please let me know if your 11-3147 can "wake from sleep" using the keyboard/touchpad.

    Thanks for your help.

    What you describe is how it's supposed to be. I've never had a laptop from any manufacturer work any differently -- are there machines that don't do this?

    Some laptops DO "wake from keyboard or touchpad" and some DO NOT. Apparently the Dell 3147 DOES NOT, it's not "defective", it's just not designed this way. It's possible a future BIOS update could enable wake but unlikely.

    One workaround is use a WIRED USB MOUSE. That will wake the computer from sleep (there's a BIOS setting to enable/disable "wake from usb"). I've tested this and it works on BIOS A03 with "wake from USB" enabled.

    Epic Caesura,

    I have an "HP dm4t" laptop that wakes from sleep by pressing a key or by touching the touchpad or by pressing the power button. My 11-3147 wakes only if the power button is pressed. One wake-up option instead of three. I would prefer having all three optrions.

    I went back to the Office Depot where I bought the 11-3147 and tested several HP laptops; they all woke from sleep with the keyboard/touchpad or power button. Two Toshiba's were just like the Dell and needed the power button to wake-up. Another Dell 2-in-1 with the same 360-degree hinge in the 13-7000 series woke-up with keyboard/touchpad or power button.

    So, it seems to be a mixed bag. Dell Tech Support said that the keyboard/touchpad "should" wake the 11-3147 from sleep, but they couldn't figure out how to do it.

    PDSway,

    Thanks for your response, but I definitely plan to stay "mouseless" with the 11-3147. I've gotten used to the 3 options to wake-up my "HP dm4t" laptop and find it more convenient than having only 1 option. Not a big deal ...

    there is no such thing as processor noise. CPU's or "processors" do not make noise, period. there is no moving parts in them. what you are probably hearing is hard drive noise, if it's louder than normal its probably failing. on my 3147 the hard drive barely makes noise. also if it's a constant noise it could be your CPU fan, but this sound would be constant usually and I don't even think the 3147 has a fan, its so small its probably passively cooled

    Are you both using the stock HDD and having the crackling noise? I am fully stock still (3147) and having the crackling noise when playing mp3 or streaming youtube :mad:. Sometimes the noise subsides. I can replicate by increasing or decreasing the volume.

    This is exactly what I'd been planning on trying and it's good to see that it will work!
    I've done my last couple of hard drive swaps using Macrium Reflect and been able to just start using the computer again right away.
    See the first post I responded too above. I'm also planning on a 9.5mm drive and apparently it's a go, with a bit of a small bulge, which I think I can live with.
    I think my last upgrade was using this company too. Does anyone else have any favorites when it comes to RAM or are they all pretty much comparable?
    Mine doesn't get hot at all, but I have yet to put in my upgrades.

    I had trouble with it all around until I got it figured out a bit and the power button corner is where I started when putting the lid back on.
    There is a fan, but it's very, very quiet and right in the middle of the back. Strange looking creature with the heat conductor running in a curve from the processor right to it.

    Hey Dell 11 3000 3147 Enthusiasts:
    I want to get rid of Windows 8.1 and install Windows 7.
    I know I have to do some Bios changes and probably reparation the drive (HDD)

    1. Can I get Windows 7 onto this computer and use it?
    2. Anyone out there got a good checklist of the procedures to follow to do so?

    thanks for any help

    The easiest way to get rid of 8.1 is to leave the OS installed but to just live in desktop mode. Virtually no difference. Are you having compatibility issues? Or just don't like learning new things?

    Honestly, I am having trouble understanding why anyone would want a 2-n-1 with Windows 7. This is exactly where 8.1 was designed to excel.
