Hello. I have been following this thread from the beginning and it has been very helpful. Now I have one Inspiron 7537 1080p and I am very happy with it, but I have some problems:
I have been experiencing ghosting in screen and, sometimes, the screen is sparkling. I know that Tuve and M_Boss had these problems, but I need to know if these problems are common in these 1080p panels or I should call Dell.
Here an example of ghosting in my laptop:

Thank you.

By ghosting do you mean the obvious white blob, the moire patterns or the faint white window boxes? I couldn't tell if the latter were reflections or not.

Sorry about the quality of the image. By ghosting i mean this (an example from google):

I did this test PRAD | TITEL and I don't see anything even though the screen bleeding issue is kindda obvious but I can live with it.:hi2:

So far no ghosting problems on mine.

¡Hi! I bought 3 days ago a 15" 7000 series. I want to change the 1TB HDD with a 250GB Samsung 840 EVO SDD. Will I have any kind of problem? I just have to clone it in my home PC and everything will be working fine with W8 and will be able to restore it anytime I need it?
Does the HDD cover have any guarantee sticker or simething like that? I asked Dell support if they could change the unit and they told me they can't, and if I do it i would loose guanrantee and bla, bla... but, will they ever realize I changed the unit if something happens? Obviously, I would take the 1TB disk back... -
No it won't void the warranty as long as you don't damage anything, if for any reason you have to send it back in the future they will probably ask you to return it with all the original components.
-
I'm having someone come out and replace the screen next Friday, give them a call. This is also for the bleeding, I know bleeding is normal but mine seems a bit excessive so I want it changed and they are
Regards,
Aaron K -
Do you have extensive warranty or do you just ask them to do that under normal warranty? I'd like mine bleeding gone as well.
-
I believe there is a year warranty.

Thanks to all for contributing - this thread has been very helpful. Received my 7537 a couple of days ago. Display is lovely. Keyboard is fine, less travel than my xps l501x, but that doesn't bother me - still adjusting to placement of arrow keys - when I move from arrows to press enter I usually end up pressing shift instead - not a dealbreaker, by any means. After installing win 8.1 and updating wireless card driver, wifi is much better, but fluctuating wildly - it will go from 300mbs to 30, then up to 180, etc. I have it right next to my xps, and while the xps also fluctuates, it's not anywhere near as drastic. Had the same not waking from sleep as some other posters, rolling back the driver seems to have fixed that problem. Overall, it seems like I've had to spend an inordinate amount of time tweaking a brand new computer. Also, it seems as slow as molasses to me considering the processor and the ram it has - has anyone else observed this? My xps with a pentium and 6gb of ram loads chrome and webpages faster. Lastly, does anyone know if there's a way to calibrate the sensitivity of the touchscreen?

I don't know what the f is going on right now. I was playing CoD Ghosts on Windows, paused and got away for some time. I come back and "No boot device found". Again. At this point I don't know whose fault this is:
- is the SSD damaged?
- is the notebook somehow faulty?
- is GRUB messing things up? If so, why would a working PC reboot in the middle of a game? It wasn't hot or anything
- Is Windows 8.1 messing partition schemes up?
Anyone able to help, please? -
Did the laptop work fine after rebooting? Or is this a persistent problem?
If the latter, I worry the SSD might have failed, but it could also be it's not firmly connected.
Hi everyone, I just ordered the Inspiron 15 7000. I've been following this thread for a while, and would like to thank you all for your feedback, which really helped me make up my mind. I got the one with the 256 GB SSD and GT 750M GPU.
Is the SSD in this model really mSATA or is it a 2.5' drive? Dell website says mSATA, but then again I read people here in this thread saying there's no mSATA functioning mSATA port on this model. -
Concerning laptop being slow, I think it may have to do with the 5,400 RPM hard drive. Mechanical hard drives really bottleneck today's systems. If you can afford to pay an extra $200 and replace it with an SSD, you'll see a MASSIVE difference.
-
No, it did not. I extracted the SSD and, as I said, the whole disk was "unallocated", no partition found at all. I'm now re-installing everything once again, if it happens again I'm returning it.
-
Project SSD has been completed.
Real piece of work installing this SSD (500Gb 840 Evo). I just took the HDD right out of the lap and swapped in the SSD then doing a reboot thinking that my USB would work fine. Turned out it didn't. So I had to put back the HDD then transfer all the data to a DVD. After that, things went smooth. So far so good. Things seems a little faster but not significant since I haven't done any intensive work just yet. I had to download all of the drivers from Dell and everything works just fine. I have a win 8.1 pro from school (for those curious). Let's see if this thing will improve battery life or not. The machine is completely quiet now. Yay. Below is the speed of the SSD? Any thought? Slow, okay, fast?
-
How is the performance compared to the envy 15t-j100?
-
I haven't run the same amount of intensive tasks like I did on the envy on this one since I know the limitation of the U CPU compared to the top of the line 4800MQ. I did test the time of encoding videos using (only just) handbrake and the Dell is about 20% slower than the Envy (which is running multiple things at the same time). Everyday tasks are pretty much the same even though i like looking at this Dell screen more (surpriseeeeeeeeeeee?) also battery life is really good (8hrs constantly with acceptable brightness and daily school work) compared to 4-ish on the Envy. So i think the Dell fits me better than the "workstation" envy. :hi2: The screen alone is worth the CPU sacrifice for me. Envy screen is decent though but again once you go IPS, you'll never go back (just like SSD and HDD)
Edit: touchpad works great now compared to some hiccups before
Edit 2: HERE COMES TROUBLE. The lap is still running after i shut it down. Long press power button didn't help at all, i think i gotta wait for it to run out of juice. Any idea guysss? Thanks -
I just got my 7537 last night and I love it except the space bar absolutely sucks. It often doesn't recognize my presses, and has to be hit pretty hard. Any way to adjust sensitivity software-wise? I write a lot on my computer so it might be a dealbreaker, even though the computer plays games beautifully, is pretty quick, has great features, etc.
-
my spacebar works fine

Try removing the battery. Does any of this help? Brand new Dell Inspiron won't shut down - Laptop General Hardware Forum - Laptop - Dell Community

Any luck with this?
-
Is it harder to press on the left side than the right ? That was what u felt too.
Do a test. Press the whole spacebar continuously for 5 seconds with some pressure. Now does it work better for the next 5 minutes?

One question to the owners about the material:
The display lid is made of aluminium - right?
The bottom seeems to consists of plastic - also right?
... and the palmrest and surrounding of the base unit consists of ...?
thx a lot!
-
As far as i notice, they are all made of aluminum. Build quality is extremely solid. 9.5/10.
-
Would a Crucial m500 240GB work as a replacement? Has anyone tried it? Would love the Samsung EVO 840 but there might be a chance to get a deal for the Crucial. Thanks!
-
I have the 14-inch model. The entire thing is made out of aluminum--except the keys (including the power button) and probably the area where the keyboard is. The track pad is this really nice matte plastic (?) surface that doesn't leave fingerprints behind. I use a universal silicone keyboard cover to prevent dust from getting into the gaps around the keys. The palm rest frame surrounding the keyboard is aluminum. Basically 90% of the unit is made out of a sand brushed aluminum where the bevels are polished to give this ultrabook a more premium polished look.
I hear the bottom part of the 15-inch and 17-inch models are made out of plastic, but I'm not sure. -
Don't see why it wouldn't, as long as it's 7 mm or less - but I think most SSD's are these days.
Actually I think the pre-installed hdd is 9 mm so anything current should fit. -
Hello, where I live the mSata is in backorder, so I have to wait untill it arrives. It's a real pain, cause the normal HDD is really slow.
I'm also going to replace the stock HDD with an SSHDD (a lot of storage, fast speeds, low prices, since normal SSD's are just to expensive and small) -
Hi Paulthuong,
I would say your results are quite good and well in line with the different benchmarks of the EVO 840 that can be found around the web.
I have some questions for you:
could you please describe in details how you did the cloning of the original HHD onto an SSD? In particular:
- software used
- were the 2 paritions present on the HDD cloned onto your SSD (including the recovery partition)?
- did you do it before or after upgrading to Win 8.1?
thanks! -
Got mine today.
To answer the guy above.
I started it up and installed Samsung Data Migration tool, attached the target SSD (840 PRO) to the USB port and ran the Data Migration tool, when it was done I swapped the HDD for the Samsung SSD and it worked without any issues.
Seems like it copied ALL partions, I have 4 partions
2,00 GB recovery partion
400 MB EFI partion
xxxx system partion
350 MB recovery partion
I think the last one was added after I upgraded to 8.1, not sure.
Also THERE IS NO mSata port, I know the US site gives that impression but I'm pretty sure it's a typo. -
Hey thanks for answering it for me, man. Actually, I did a clean install because first of all, I don't want bloatwares, second of all, since this is a pretty new machine, I don't have to transfer much data, lastly, the USB cable I ordered hasn't arrived yet so I couldn't connect the SSD to the lap for cloning. But the process is pretty easy. I only have 2 partitions on the 500Gb, one for normal c drive and the other one about 10% of the SSD which is kept empty to maintain the performance of the SSD.
-
There really is no bloat so it's not really nessecary.
-
Mine came with 5 partitions - can't figure that one out.
-
OK, so now we need someone who ordered it with mSATA to find out what the difference is, since it is an option; so it does exist. The part required may simply not be included unless you order it with mSATA (same thing happened with the Inspiron 15r SE).
-
hey can you post a link to where you purchased the silicone keyboard cover? is the backlight impaired in any way? thanks
-
Bottom part is plastic allright. Got mine yesterday.
-
Got mine yesterday, nice bit of kit and very solidly built.
First thing i tried was to clone my HDD to an older Crucial 250 GB SSD using Macrium Reflect. I used diskpart to clean the SSD first, then cloned 5 partitions in 28 minutes. But when i replaced the original 1TB HDD with SSD and booted up, I only got as far as the Win8 login screen and system shut itself down (Screen black, no lights on) I could not turn it back on immediately, only after a minute or so, not sure. Same if started and went into BIOS. After about 20 seconds, systems shuts down. Tried it several times before putting HDD back in again and booted with no issues. Anyone have an idea?
Another Q. Could I use Samsung Data Migration tools to clone the HDD to SSD if the SSD is non-samsung? -
Is there a reason why everyone chooses a SSD instead of a SSHD? Don't you think 250GB is simply to little to have as only internal storage?
-
I personally don't like the noise of the HDD running inside my laptop so I took that out and replaced it with an SSD then I still can use the HDD as an external hard drive to store things that I might not need all the time like movies...
-
I want a SSD because I usually ride motorbikes with my laptop and I'm pretty sure vibrations will break any HDD or SSHD. Also, probably SSD will consume less energy, will be faster and will produce less noise and heat. I dont really need lots of space, I have my PC with 4TB and all "big" data will be there.
-
That is an understandable answer.
-
Other than the obvious noise, heat, power differences and reliability already mentioned. You can't decide what is cached in an SSHD, just what you use the most, and I use a lot of different programs so there would not be enough room to justify that. An SSD would provide faster speeds across everthing, including anti-virus scans, which would just be as slow on an SSHD as a regular HDD. SSD's also offer
Best of both worlds would be if mSATA is indeed supported. -
Main factor is speed. This laptop replaced an old Mac Book Pro from 2007 - where i installed an SSD last year. Startup and overall handling was massively improved - and the Mac Book could not even utilize the speed of the SSD fully due to the older hardware. At work, i also have an Samsung Evo 128 GB SSD installed in my laptop. Also a massive improvement. Everything just becomes very "snappy". Will never again have a laptop without SSD
-
No it only works with samsung drives.
-
Hey I am hoping someone can help me.
Just got my new 15 7000 today.
How do I upgrade 8.1? Online it says there should be a link in the Windows Store, but I have nothing.
Also, my F11 and F12 keys don't adjust brightness.
All the other F keys work. Should be able to change brightness?
Thanks to any who reply. -
Having looked at both 7000 series models and the older 17R SE, I tried to order the latter with Bluray & 2Tb in storage. Even though Dell are still listing this for ordering, I'm told it can be fulfilled!
Given that, which 7000 model would people go for? Looking at top end models in each of the UK range. Shame there's no Bluray option, but can obviously get an external drive.
Would the 15 with an external monitor be better than the 17? Can the 15 take 16Gb memory too? -
Just go to system setting, check for all updates, install them and restart the comp. After that, go to the Store app, there should be a windows right away for the upgrade, click in it to go to the terms and policy page, agree them and then click download on the next page.
My brightness buttons didn't work right out of the bat either, but it seemed to be fixed after I installed updates and rebooted the machine so don't worry. -
Do you carry it around much? If not, I'd go for the 17in. The 17in FHD screen is slightly better than the 15in FHD in terms of brightness, black level and contrast although it is TN. Battery life is not that much different. And yes, the 15 has 16Gb option or you can easily upgrade later. Cheers
