it seems to only happen when the intel wireless card finds a connection, but it's unbearable
having my speakers on mute doesn't help (obviously, cause it's the PC speaker)
and in the audio settings i set pc speaker to mute, but this doesn't help
any ideas?
thanks

Have you solved the issue yet, Do You have any external device attached to the system ?
-
nope, just a usb mouse
i emailed dell's "support" and they said the problem was too "technical for email"
and for me to call -
Are you able to connect through ethernet cable (Wired connection)? Would you get the same beeping codes ?
-
you could always disable your PC speaker.
device manager-->view-->hidden devices-->under nonplug and play, right click on beep and disable it.
From what i've read, this works most of the time, but not always. You can always edit your registry value for it also. -
i already did that, but that setting actually disables my regular speakers???
i had to turn it back on for regular sound (and even with it disabled, it still made the annoying noise) -
You shouldn't be getting that kind of beeping, Does it sound like when it acknowledges a PC Card ?
-
I found this on the Dell site: "I finally found out how to get the wlan detection high sound to go off...found it in the properties under alerts, and now the machine is all good and quiet when it should be".
I hope that tidbit helps in some way. -
hmm, that's weird. Disabling your PC speaker shouldn't disable your regular speakers. I disable mine, and my speakers work normally. There is a registry edit that you could do, but since kegobeer find the solution, i doubt you'll need it.
-
Look in the BIOS.
-
i figured it out.
it's not in the b iod (thanks for the idea though goga)
in the intel wireless settings, there are several "notification" options...NONE of which mention sound, but it does infact work if you un-tick those boxes -
Could you be more especific, ... where exactly did you go to disable the anoying beep ?
-
Here you go, DCSE.
-
Great, Thanks

By the way, the issue isn't just with the wireless card.. in some cases where you are telnetting into a unix machine, using Citrix MetaFrame, or VNC, you'll find that Unix loves to BEEP at you for tab completions and the like. This solution helped prevent my wife from throwing the laptop out the window while I'm working -
-
OK. I did find the alerts (DUH). Anyway that doesn't work. Still beeps.
However, I called Dell and they had me pull the memory chips thinking this may be the problem. I will post again if this works.
Thanks. -
Pulling memory did not work. Unchecking all the wireless notifications did not work. FYI, this is also a problem with Toshiba's and BenQ's.
TweakUI did not work. Registry edit did not work. Hidden devices did not work.
Going to look at the Logitech USB mouse next. -
OK. I pulled the cordless USB mouse and started the machine this morning and it beeped immediately. Once booted, I uninstalled Logitech's software. Been running five hours so far and nothing yet. Which means nothing at this point. I will post results one way or the other.
-
I just reached for my USB cordless mouse--it wasn't there. Logitech brand. Really sweet mouse. LX7, I believe.
My machine has been off and on a few times today. And, I have been monitoring as best I can. No beeping since boot up at 6:15 a.m. this morning (as far as I know).
I am putting this machine on a deathwatch for the next few days until I am satisfied it is the USB cordless mouse causing the beeping or I am proved wrong.
I hope to make my last post re: this beeping problem soon (read: solved).
I appreciate all the suggestions herein.
I am guessing it is the Logitech going into and out of standby mode. Which seems strange since I have been at the computer when the beep has occured--and, I am not much of a keyboarder.
Thanks. -
Alas, it is not the USB mouse. Some talk online about the Hitachi HDD, which I have. I don't know. I don't trust Dell to solve the problem anymore. Tech support is what it is--you get what you pay for (TANSTAAFL).
This is more of an annoyance than anything. But, it simply bugs me that I cannot fix it. That the speaker disabling does not do the trick. I mean, if the speaker is disabled, it stands to reason that something else is the cause.
I'll keep trying.
I really appreciate everyone here posting. Great site. -
I managed to solve this on my M1710 by using TweakUI, Clicking On General and Unticking "Beep On Errors"
This is caused by having no sound attached to "Default Beep" in the Sound And Audio Devices; Sound Tab. It then resorts to using your PC Speaker.
Another alternative is disabling "Beep" in the Device Manager (Show hidden devices, under Non-Plug and Play Drivers) However, I'm not sure if doing this will also disable beeps in the BIOS. -
Sorry. I thought I had posted in all the locations I had been looking for help. It was definitely a defective Hitachi HDD. I got it replaced and the beeping/squealing went away--until it just happened again (once) a day or two ago. But, it is definitely the HItachi HDD--not system beeps or sounds. If I hear it again in the next month or so, the HDD goes back and I will be requesting a DIFFERENT manufacturer HDD. Thanks for all the help.

I had the same problem and this is what I did in the end:

I had the same problem with my Inspiron 6400 (not sure what the difference is between it and a e1505). Anyways, I found that when I switched my speakers it stopped. I used to have a pair of Altec Lansing 2321's, and I upgraded to Altec Lansing 4121's. Much nicer sound, and they stopped making awful sounds. You might want to try a different set of speakers.

I had the beeping problem with my inspiron 6000 intel 2915ABG card. The beeping stopped when I unchecked 'Show Information Notifications' from the Proset Wireless app settings window ( http://ekawas.blogspot.com/2006/11/intel-proset-wireless-issues-and.html)

People with Intel 2200 and the 2915 wireless adapters, Dell has released an updated driver that corrects certain problems that I have encountered. I have tried them and I am satisfied Go to Dell's site to download. Good luck!

Well..I know this problem. Whenever it finds the Wi-Fi connection, it gives a weird beep sound. The only way to turn this PC SPEAKER sound off is to assign it a soothing sound in SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES in CONTROL PANEL. This sound is the default beep. Select a scheme where you can turn off all other sounds except the DEFAULT BEEP and assign a click sound to it (which won't be as daunting and loud as the beep!)
The muting subject going on has one clarification. The external loudspeakers on the laptop can be muted and still the earphone output remains alive. This can be done from the taskbar loudspeaker icon. Open the mixer and go to Properties, Advanced and select to mute the speakers. So, by default, the speakers won't sound but you can hear from the headphones like normal.
I hope this helps. -
