I have ordered a Inspiron 700m with 256. I had a 512Mb module from a unit only a year or so old. But it's a PC2100 module. The 700m takes PC2700. Will I slow the machine down putting the PC2100 module in? Or has PC2700 become the norm, and not necessaily run better than PC2100 in the 700m? I was hoping to use this module, but don't want to do ANYTHING to slow the new unit down.

Actually you are correct in assuming that it will slow down your computer. What will happen is it would create a bottleneck effect, where the information would all jam together at the one point and slowly trickle through.

Why would you want to slow down your notebook as it is already? IF I were you just buy a new chipset from ZipZoomFly.com for a really good deal on PC 2700 for 60 bucks or so on 512mb.

ANy way using slow ram will cause a bottle neck as said. In addition your computer will suck so much your just degrading from what it is. A fast CPU is nothing with a Slow RAM.

Now who said I wanted to slow it down? I wanted to save $60 -$80 bucks by using a module I already have as opposed to spending more money. But not at the sake of slowing it down.
So, PC 2100 is slower than the FSB or whatever the unit runs at? I realize the memory is slower, but adding PC3200 doesn't make the 700m faster either. I didn't know if PC2700 and PC2100 run at the same speed in a 400 FSB machine.
    Thanks for the replies.
