I have been anticipating the Inspiron 6000, xps2 and 9300 because of the expected upgradability with PCI-e and the MXM slot standard. After looking at the video cards in these systems they seem to be just as proprietary as previous notebooks, and no MXM slot. This is a bit of a let down, and I don't expect much more upgradability or vid cards being offered by Dell for these units than previous units.

The XPS2 has a MXM slot, and the 9300 should also.

Was anyone else expecting this kind of upgradability?

It is very profitable for manufacturers to make laptops proprietary, having the only upgrade solution being a new laptop.
Maybe manufacturers "allowing" upgradability is only a pipe dream.

It is definitly ore profitable to make proprietary graphics cards, because then each manufacture has to redesign the card to fit in their notebook. Also, there is a shorter time to market gap. The quicker a new product gets to market the more people will spend to get it. Read some articles on MXM, and you will understand that the benefits of MXM are not for the consmer, they trickle down to us, they are reall in favor of the manufactures.

Right, it is cheaper to allow the vid manufacturer to spec a video card module, and consumers benefit in decreased costs and upgradability. However I believe Dell cringes at the thought of many consumers not buying a new laptop every time a new video card is released.
