Hey guys, got one question. Does the Inspiron 640m have a PCMCIA slot? I read on a review that it doesnt. But i checked some pictures on the net and saw some sort of a card slot on the left side of the laptop? Is this the PCMCIA? If not, what's the slot for?

I think it is an express card slot, not a PC Card slot. I can't remember if the 640m has been updated to have the express card or not. Dell changed all of the dual core systems to have a express card, so I'm pretty sure that it is.

It is the same as a PCMCIA, but different size/technology. We have a Express Card slot guide in our dummy forum that will give you more information on it.

Expresscard is the better option once there are more peripherals to take advantage of it... you can find more information on www.expresscard.org

The only problem with express cards is that it is a new technology, so there are not very many cards avalable for it. Things like Sound cards have not been released as an express card yet, but new cards are available all the time, so it is only a matter of time before more cards come out.

Luckily I didn't have a need for a PCMCIA Slot, nor do I have a need for an Express card slot -- yet. The lack of the PCMCIA could be a drawback for some users, though, including business travels who want to use the PCMCIA mobile technology card.
