what is the point of comparing a 13" notebook with a 15" notebooks size?????

    is that a joke?

and $1800 for the macbook "air".., or rather.. internet tablet?? yet another overpriced piece of apple crap

have you seen the specs?... their awesome... if the computer was made 5 years ago.

steve jobs must wake up laughing..

Exactly. A better comparison would be the MBA against the m1330.

However......no optical drive or user-replaceable battery = BUNK! The sad part is the number of Apple Pavlovians whose mouths started watering the moment El Jobso got on stage who will pre-order the MBA.

    Ouch. That was harsh.

But did you ever read the description on the Apple website? It went something like "portability without the compromises of an ultra-portable..."

    LOL :D

We're talking, what, one USB port? External optical drive? Sounds like ultra-portable compromises to me... :p

Hey I totally agree with you that you can't compare the two. The m1530 is one the most powerful notebooks of its class today and you can't even begin to compare the sepcs. However, as I stated in the article, I took the comparison shots to show the size difference between a 15" notebook, which is probably the most common sized laptop for the average consumer today.

Plus I still don't know who would want to pay $1800+ when you can get a much better configuration on a m1330/m1530 and save $400-500!

Macbook Air is clearly made for people who got money to burn. What kind of person would buy that insted of Macbook Pro or even a Macbook and get more features for less money! Only Apple can come up with these kind of stuff cause they have got a lot of rich idiots drooling somehow.

    sahaskatta,

Thx for the pictures. The MBA is really thin and light(not my style though).

    Other posters,

Keep the MBA bashing to a minimum. If you want to discuss the lackluster features of the MBA, then continue the discussion in this thread(MBA announced at MacWorld 08)

The first picture reminds of the old times when you needed a whole desktop for your laptop to keep all the peripherals like the CD-ROM drive.

Only Apple could remove everything (including the point) of buying a laptop, and then sell it on such marketing hyperbole as 'ultra light' and 'super thin'. If you remove all of the damned components of course it's going to be 'ultra light' and 'super thin'!

So without furthur ado, ladies and gentleman may I present for your computing delight, the Mac Pro Air.

This ultra light, whisper quiet leviathan produces very little heat, and cannot crash unlike those other machines you buy in order to... you know... actually do stuff. It can be yours for the frivolous sum of *positions little finger* one miiiilliiion dollars.

    ;)

(@Kdawgca: I didn't see that before I'd posted Mr. Moderator. Sorry. It's all in good humour if that's any consolation!)

I don't think there's anything wrong having a comparison shot with the M1530. It gives some perspective as to how slim the MBA is. It's like taking a pic of a 30" monitor without anything to give it perspective. Now take it with a 22" or 24" it gives a better perspective of how big a 30" is.

Having said that I still wouldn't buy the MBA even if I had money to burn. :p

for an ultraportable I'd buy an asus eee, pocket $1400 and laugh all the way to the bank.

the MBA is form over function.

There was a shootout review posted on digg.com today between the M1330, the new Mac, and a Toshiba. The 1330 won hands down. Better performance with a lower price.

the ASUS would be awesome for an ultraportable. I want to get one when the larger displays become available. It would be nice to have such a small device for roughly $300-400 to use to take notes in class. I'd mainly use it as a word processor and possibly use it with the college wireless network for web browsing in lecture halls. I have a m1530 for all my other needs!

No problem. Luckily, the search on digg kicks butt:
    http://gizmodo.com/345574/is-macbook-air-worth-the-money-five-slim-laptops-face-off

    Conclusion:
The best deal—if you don't mind an extra pound of weight and half-inch of thickness—is the Dell XPS M1330. It bests the MacBook Air in nearly every single category, delivering about 30% more processing power, 50% more memory, over 300% more hard drive space, plus a dedicated graphics card. All of this, for $300 less.
