PLEASE help me to factory reset inspirion 6400

I have read through a few suggestions on search engine walls and followed several hints and tips, all with no success. hope some one can help; ??

when loading windows normal or though 'safe mode' it take around 30 seconds and then stops on a blue page with white writing, 'A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO YOUR COMPUTER UMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME''

i have followed the advice the page continues to give such as F8 and then start through safe mode.... same result

I have pressed ctrl and F11 when on the 'dell' blue bar, takes me to the factory reset page and i follow the correct steps, the procedure pauses in 'symantec ghost 8.3' page. something flashes on the grey seen for a nano second and then disappears, 30 seconds later a restore box appears explaining that the recovery process was not successful and asks me to call a dell technician for assistance. can anyone help before i spend a fortune on the phone

Have you considered that the hard drive might be failing? Try running diagnostics or scanning the drive on another machine w/h HDTune, etc.

Usually unmountable boot volume points to a bad hard drive...you can hit F12 and boot into the diagnostics and run the Dell Diagnostics.
