i've been hearing praises and nightmares, but the bottom line is, dell inspirons are pretty cheap, and they fit the college student budget very well. especially with those insane coupons, i can get a pretty godly set up for about a grand if i wait.

i plan on getting a dell inspiron 1520.

    so here goes a poll

i won't recommend 1520 but recommend for a 1420 which has a better internal design:less thermal resistance in heat dissipation structure, easier to upgrade CPU etc...

I just got a 1520 a few days ago and I love it!! I don't think there is a better deal for the money.

Yes it does feel a little bulky and it is a little heavy its no g1s oe mbp but I got it for 984!!! What a deal for the price I paid I can easily look over its short commings. One other thing when I have the screen closed it giggles around a bit its sort of annoying I have heard other people with the same complaint but once again... a minor issue.

It would depend on the person's needs and budget.
Now that 1520's have an XP option, there's more likelihood that it would be suitable, and Dell has a better customer/tech support than most. So in some cases I might recommend the Inspiron. However I'd warn them not to get ink on the lid if they got a colored lid.

I sent my hp 6500 back a couple of days ago... heck, I'll take a little bulk if I don't have to put up with temps up to 107 degrees on the left side of the computer burning a hole in my leg. Now I only have to worry about Dell's battery blowing my leg off when the battery goes.... but that seems to be in the past. HP heat issues are the future.

I'd recommend the 1520... for the price (with coupons) you can't beat it... plus a little bulk hopefully makes it a little more sturdy... I'd hate to have seen my hp 6500 take a fall...

Usually people start posting on forums when they encounter problems, so it's natural that a lot of posts you see here will point towards a problem in the 1520.

But if we include the hundreds of thousands of people who don't post on forums because they are happy with their machine, you would see that the people who got some sort of problem is actually a pretty small population.

The design on the 1520 is ugly, and it actually looks bigger than most 15.4 inch laptops in the market. So what? I paid $1800 for my machine(I included BR drive because I need it), and the last thing I want is someone to steal it just because it looks good. So the worst it looks, the better for me.

Everything on my laptop is great, and the only problem I had was the delay on the ESD(could have been because I got the midnight blue color, and they were having problems with quality on the paint).

    So I do recommend a 1520.

Ink probably wouldn't show on the blue because it's very dark. But it seems to be impossible to get ball point pen ink off the microsatin lids without causing even more damage to the lid. We've had a couple of threads where people got ink on their lids recently. Here's one

i'm a hardcore gamer. i mostly play CS and WOW. max settings in these two games is a JOKE for this laptop. the power is unreal. seems like it has never ending power. the screen is one of the best lcd's i've ever seen. for some reason the games play/look better on this laptop than my gaming desktop.

I would more than recommend the 1520. The only thing which i think needs to be brought into consideration is the fact that the laptop isnt the lightest laptop in the world, but if its not likely to be moved from place to place every half an hour i wouldnt count this as a problem.

    Go for it!!

I have a 1520 and is kinda big to carry to classes.

im thinking of sacrificing the 8600m graphics card, and downgrade to a 1420, what do you guys think?

the 1520, great machine for all purposes. I do a lot of media creation and usual gaming session, all smooth and hell.. It is a tad bulky, but it runs cool and is very very strong.

The machine games pretty damn nicely for a laptop.. Sometimes when get fragged I lean back and realize "ho ****. I'm on a laptop.. lol".. Can't complain.

And someone mentioned the 1420 is easier to upgrade.. Hah yeah sure w.e, Take the palm rest off - ta da.. Theres the CPU and well everything, cannot get any easier then that on a laptop (1520).

The 8400 is nice but NO - it honestly 2/5 of what the 8600 has to offer.

The HP's suck, I was in the store and those things are a flimsy as hell, and it was pretty damn warm considering it was just idealing with vista on a shelf.

They're not that much different in weight.
According to Dell, the 1420 is 5.39 pounds and the 1520 is 6.40 pounds.
    They're both "chubby."

Unless the 1520 can't quite fit in your backpack or something, I don't think it would be worth the bother of exchanging it. If you want a real difference, I think you'd have to go for the M1330.
