Basically i have both consoles but i can't play in high def because i only have a standard def tv. It the HDMI port on dell m1330/1530 a real port like the ones on HDTVs (as in the quality like an HDTV?)? Will i see an upgrade in graphics compared to my s-tv because i plan on getting a laptop soon.

I doubt its an IN though. Its most likely designed as out only. So no, you wouldn't be able to play your video games in high-def.

Also, unless you have a 1900x1200 screen, the PS3 would probably only recognize 720p.

yes, both M1330 and M1530 HDMI ports are for output only. Notebooks usually don't have built in video capture devices. Besides, I think its better to play on a standard def big screen TV than on a hi-def tiny screen.

Thats kind of what I was thinking. Playing on a 15" (or whatever) screen kind of defeats the purpose.

But then, if you're sitting 2' away from the screen, who cares?

I always thought doing this would be cool though.

I mean, just in case you needed something to play on.

Like PhoenixFx said, you would need some sort of video capturing device or the video card would need to be VIVO enabled and good luck getting that on a laptop.

I'm sure there's some sort of USB something that you could use instead.

For playing in hd you can also try a computer monitor, maybe you will need a vga adapter or dvi adapter. but there are some monitors that have component video and even hdmi conectors, if you get a small notebook this can be a great thing.

aparently this will allow you to connect any video device to your laptop/PC via USB so that you can view the video output of the device on the screen...

But these interfaces are limited to standard definition, you will only get near the same image in a smaller screen. something like that with hdmi or component video would be nice.

But USB wont be able to handle the data rate of HDMI or Component! Neither can Firewire, so that make it impossible to do!

Either use it in SD or get a video capture card than can take HDMI In! (Which you cant get for laptops AFAIK)...

Even if you somehow manage to find a capture device capable of capturing hi definition video content (which is very unlikely) , its not worth the cost nor the trouble. Instead buy a new TV or a 20”+ LCD monitor.

What about the built in TV tuner you can get on your laptop from dell.
Can you connect a ps3 or xbox to that?

phoenixfix is right - get a cheap 23" olevia (my brother did and I must say, for $350, it is a pretty decent HDTV/Monitor - he has it hooked up to his pc AND ps3)....
