Can't believe this, I've only had it for a few weeks now, and already the paint is beginning to rub off my i8600 silver casing. AND I'm always REALLY careful with it, and treat it with utmost respect.

The i8600 is a really powerful machine, but Dell have put it in frankly, a crap case, with useless mouse stick buttons and trampolene keyboard (guess the keyboard isn't that bad...).

Everyone out there thinking of getting an 8600. If you have the money, I'd really advise going for an all metal machine like the M60, or something respectible in plastic like IBM. <sigh> [ :(]

..bugger ... was just about to buy one tomorrow ...
Magiciaen - wonder if this is a one off as Im sure if this happened on all inspirion models or even 8600s that a truckload of people would have said something about this and a lot more in forums ... I see someones recently posted negative things about d800 ... any one know of a brand that produces a similar spec machine to dell 8600 that can recommend???

The paint's coming off on one of the edges, probably as I accidently scraped it on something. The end result will be like my Dad's Advent in a few years time; it'll look kind of worn. [ :(] Someone else was complaining of silver coming off the palm rests, which I didn't quite understand. Now I do! If I could go back, I would definitely buy an M60 now..... It's a shame, the 8600 is such a powerful machine, there is nothing else with similar specs to it. Performance wise, I give it full marks. Even the M60 comes with only a 2x DVD-RW and not a 4x (although I THINK you can buy the Inspiron DVD-RW kit separately for £200 and put it in the M60...).

Back to the drawing board for you I guess! <g>

    Magiciaen,

Have just put an order in for a M60 with the following specs (got the email just need to confirm tomorrow) ...

    customised the following deal
    http://commerce.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config/frameset.asp?c=606&n=2501&b=50300&m=gbp&cu=ukbsd&l=en&s=ukbsd&store=ukbsd&sbc=ukbsdprecn&v=d

    to:
    Mobile Intel® Pentium® M Processor - 1.6GHz, 15.4in UltraSharp WUXGA
    nVidia® Quadro™ FX Go1000 128MB graphics card
    60GB ATA-100 IDE (7,200 rpm) Hard Drive
512 MB NonECC 333Mhz DDR RAM Memory (2*256)
    XP PRO
    Internal 24x CD Drive
    Dell TrueMobile™ 1400 Dual Band WLAN (802.11a/b/g, 54Mbps)
    Dell TrueMobile BlueTooth™ Internal Card
Precision Mobile Warranty - 3 Year Next Business Day On-Site
Gold Technical Support (3 Year Coverage) for Precision
3 Years CompleteCare Accidental Damage Cover from London General Insurance
    Free Delivery

    Total Price £1937.58

The april special was £190 off, free drive upgrade (which I upped further to 60/7200), free gold tech support, free accidental cover
and the sales rep threw in free delivery.

I assume this is a good deal ... what do you think? Its a several hundred more than I originally wanted to pay but I guess I be getting a rock solid computer that is hassle free for 3 years. And because I signed up under small business no Indian tech support.

Only got 24xCD player as saw that I can get 4xDVD/RW via States for $160US (£90). Bit of pain no CD writer to start but I guess it wont matter in long run.

Can you see if there is anything I missed ...

and Ive also got couple questions...
    1. Should I upgrade processor further from 1.6 to 1.7 (will be extra $130 + VAT).
    2. Should I change 256x2 to 512x1 (+VAT £30) as I will be looking to upgrade at later date
    3. Any idea what Anti-Theft Device + Asset Tagging is?

    Cheers,
    sleepy

And thanks again for your help.

Wow, you got that puppy stocked. The only thing I would recommend it getting a single memory card if you think you want to upgrade down the road.

    To answer your other questions:

    1) No, this is not worth the money.
    2) Yes, see above.
    3) I think it's their tag that keeps your address online should someone find it. The anti-theft may just be a locking device, but I'm not sure.

    Brian,

Do you know if Dell would be willing to take my 8600 back so that I could upgrade to an M60? I've thought about it, and the creaking plastic, pliable paint etc..... if I'm going to have this thing for 3-4 years, I want it to last gracefully, and I might as well spend a decent amount of money on it. I've had for just less than a month. Any precedents for this?

Im thinking paint will be an issue on any laptop. I think they should just use colored plastic.

I heard there is a new paint that you can buy that sticks to plastics chemically (a rare thing).

Im thinking of something to put on mine cause I know my hands will wear off the paint. They wear off everything.

    Im quite acidic.

Like the Aliens in all the Alien movies.
