I have an Inspiron 2200 (it is a refurbushed machine and I think I know why).

Anyways, the DVD-RW drive that came with it (the Sony DW 56A, which is a piece of crap), has died on me (it will read DVDs, but not CDs) and I don't have the time to deal with Dell's tech support (I'm currently in Japan and I won't be back in the states for a while), so I don't have the time to deal with tech support (not that they'ed be much of a help anyways).

The question I have is this. The drive I've been looking at is the Panasonic UJ-845-B and I was wondering if it will work with the Inspiron 2200.

Also, is there a way to see if my current drive is set for slave or master without taking the computer apart.

If needed, the specs on the machine are

    1.6ghz Pentium M processor
    60gb HD
768mb Ram (not sure what type)
