My hope is that this is true, anybody know anything about that? I'm sure all the notebook makers are pissed at intel for providing all these whiny chips leading to exchanges/returns and that pressure is on intel to not produce another whiner...

Is whine a manufacture defect or something that should be expected? I am a potential m1530 buyer.
-
The Penryn's have different sleep states from the Merom's. So, I'm still hoping that this will eliminate the whine. I find it odd that none of the reviews I have seen have addressed this.
-
the m1530 doesnt have the whine issue
-
vengance_01 is right CPU's do not whine. That would be something else. I have several Core 2 Dual CPU's in several machines in my company and none whine. I have Acer's, Lenovo's (3000 series), and Thinkpads. if the Dell M1530's Whine then it is more likely one of the chips emitting electrical noise that is whining, not the actual CPU. This would be a problem with the Dell motherboards and how they are designed or built. If mine whines when i get it, it will be on it's way back to Dell immediately, if they tell me it is normal, i will be getting a different Notebook and scratching Dell off forever.

I had this whine with every laptop i've had so far:
Samsung R50 (Centrino Pentium M 1.7 GHz)
BenQ S73U (Centrino Duo T2250)
Acer Travelmate 8200 (Centrino Duo something)
Vostro 1500 (Core 2 Duo T7500)
Everytime i used RMClock to supress it. Oddly enough, many people don't seem to register the whine, so it depends on your hearing if you actually notice it or not. The loudness of the whine also varies from unit to unit.
Well, i haven't seen a notebook ranging up from Centrino with Pentium M that didn't emit a whine in some form... -
But its not the cpu making the noise, trust me.
-
Th 1530's whine, trust me. If your doesn't you're lucky - that or it'll happen over time.
-
-
yh but as far as we know the southbridge whines, so this may go away as pentryn uses a new sb i think
-
Just baffles me that this noise is around for a couple of years and manufacturers seem unable to get rid of it... -
-
btw I've had my new Latitude D630 with T7500 for a few days now and I have not heard any cpu (or other) whining. -
Apparently if you are under the age of 30 you will hear the whining. That's if whining is minimal. The m1530 does whine at a very high frequency, mine started today...odd.
-
woah! i am about to buy a dell laptop, either inspiron or vostro, in either case, the dell rep told me they are the same, except for the chassis. so does the inspiron/vostro whine???
-
not on any of our M133O we have but 2 college I can hear the whine on their system...and I'm pushing on in years as one would say.. Vieil homme
-
I have an HP notebook with an Intel 2.2 merom CPU and I can certainly hear the whine, but it's intermittent and changes quite frequently from second to second.
Interestingly, my wife has a Macbook Pro with the same CPU (2.2 Intel) and it is completely silent on the mac, not a single whine.
This leads me to believe that it's not the CPU but something else that's causing this whine. So Penryn or not, the whine could very well be there. -
The Penryn does NOT use a different southbridge as someone suggested, at least not until Montevina. This high pitched electrical noise you talk of is common - and shouldn't be an issue for most users. It isn't annoying unless you just happen to have dog hearing or something.
-
So this whine actually exists on the m1530 too? I thought at least the problem was fixed
-
-
Apple also have it,.. read this:
http://www.appledefects.com/?p=207 -
We have 3 M1330 systems and there is no noticeable whine on any of them. Maybe we got lucky!
-
Maybe I'm lucky, but I get no whine, unless my battery is installed. Even when it's not charging, just sitting idle. -
Yep.. my machine whines only when on battery.. hmmm
-
I had a Penryn C2D T9500 2,6GHz equipped ASUS S96S for demo/testing purposes for a day (and still use it at work). I DID whine a little bit but it was only audible in a quiet home environment.
Right now I'm thinking of getting a T7100 equipped D630 instread of T7500 and later swap the processor out for a Penryn T8300. How does Dell`s warranty terms and conditions relate to these kind of things (changing the processor on my own)?? -
Wow. I read about this awhile ago and then today while on battery power I noticed my m1530 is whining. Its coming from the right side under the keyboard. Is there an actual fix for this? Is it a defect? I've never noticed it before becuase I am mostly using ac power. It definately is noticable on battery and quite annoying. Its also not a long continuous whine. its more like .75 second pulses. If i plug it in it immediately goes away. If I take the battery out it comes back. Can this be fixed?

-
Yep.. less noticeable or non-existant on 2ghz or lower CPU.. also only noticeable on battery...
-
Luckily my just-recieved D630 (T7300) doesnt whine at all
-
WorkinProgress Notebook Evangelist
i've received 3. seem to all have the whine...
m1330 btw.
What does RMClock do actually? Does it clock down the processor? -
My wife`s D830 doesn`t make a sound, except the fan noise when it get`s overheated.....
-
Grrrr it's hard to tell whether some laptops either have or don't have the whine and whether it's just based on whether the people actually hear it. I'm thinking about purchasing the XPS m1530 with the promotions, but the penryn + led solution seems to be better...but will be a lot more expensive.

I think some must whine louder than others. Otherwise there wouldn't be people who have more than one and say that one whines and the other doesn't.
-
I think all this senseless speculation is getting us nowhere just like the whine in the 1330 I'm typing on right now. I could barely concentrate at the library today when I brought my notebook to assist in studying for biology. Hopefully I can get a replacement minus the whine and grainy screen. If that doesn't happen then I'm returning this piece of junk.
-
Agreed, I'm tired of people complaining about whine - a LOT of notebooks have it, I know - I've owned over 20 different laptops mostly Dell. Some had it and others didn't. If you find it annoys you then swap out your laptop for a different MODEL and be done with it, not just another of the same model. I found that this "whine" was pretty consistent across a model range. I had more problems with whine with Quanta manufactured Dell untis than Compal. From Dell's current lineup though I only know for sure that the D series Latitudes and Precisions do NOT have ANY trace of whine with my extensive use of D620s, D820s, Precision M65, D830s and Precision M4300s.
Also if your computer "whined", upgrading components won't help. It is the whole of the mainboard that is pretty much making the electrical noise. Changing a CPU, etc won't change this whine. -
-
My T9300 dv6500se whines and I might return it because of the grating noise. It is tiresome on the ears.
Penryn = no more CPU whine?
