It's been two weeks since I've received my m1330, which had the whining problem and a cheap CMO grainy screen. I've eliminated the system whining noise by disabling Popup Mode with RMClock, as advised by some forum members. Dell sent a technician out to replace my screen with a Samsung, which I absolutely love.
However, the Samsung screen has a whining problem of its own! It seems to emit a whining noise, worser than the one from the system, but only when the brightness setting is set to anything but the minimum or maximum. I've alleviated this issue by setting my brightness to maximum only, since the minimum setting suffers from backlight flickering.
With both solutions applied, I have absolutely no high pitched noise whatsoever from the system. The only drawback seems to be heavily reduced battery life...
My options are: call Dell for a replacement, hoping the noise problem will be fixed, or to accept the makeshift solutions. I will probably receive a Penryn chip with the new system, since the Merom chips seems to be discontinued now. However, I will risk losing my beautiful Samsung screen, which is reported to have better colors than the Toshiba screens they put with new systems now.
Before I make my decision, can somebody tell me if the Penryn chips have the whine noise at all? My 21 days guarantee expires on the 18th... I need to decide before then to make sure I won't get slapped with a refurbished. Thank you in advance, guys!

Unfortunately, there have been reports (forum user wurger) of whine on the Penryn processors as well.
The Samsung whine however doesn't sound normal. -
I was hoping that a Penryn replacement with a Toshiba screen might fix both noise problems, but I guess I could live with the solutions I've got. -
I've received two Toshibas with the lovely sparkle so don't get your hopes up. Now I don't know if I want to send both back or keep the one. Le sigh.
