Yes - I'm guessing the 24th/25th when the special offers come to an end.... now let's just hope the WXGA+ LED screen makes an appearance on the m1530 at the same time and Dell can have my money.

Good sign - and they're offering both Merom and Penryn on that notebook, a good sign for upgradability.

What's your configuration right now? It went away for me as soon as I switched from Vista to XP...not sure exactly why but it certainly made sticking with XP an easier choice.

I would like to hear this whine everyone keeps talking about. Is it a frequency thing that happens with only certain ones or what? My processor doesn't do this. Is it just happening in random processors?

Hmm, would it be worth a tradeoff with the 619$ coupon? =P
I'm guessing they'll release it after it expires...

cpu whine is like a lottery, you have to pray before buying a new dell.
there are some lucky people who don't have this issue

It occurs on some Merom processors (there's no general pattern to it) when they enter the C4 sleep state (a low-power state that has nothing to do with the computer actually being in Sleep mode or off). From what I've read it's happened in the past with non-Merom processors as well, but it seems to be a comparitively large problem with Merom.

It is not a problem exclusive to Dells. It can occur on any Merom-based notebook, and has appeared on laptops from other manufacturers such as Apple as well.

Hopefully Penryn will solve this rather vexing issue. I haven't heard of any Penryn CPU whine issues yet. But it's still early.

They're not putting an x800 of either ATI or nVidia in their 15" notebook. Ever. It's too large and too hot.

Besides the whine, is the Penryn that big of an upgrade? I know they have a nother one coming down the road soon as well.
When do you actually get the notebook before a new processor
    comes out?
    Just looking for people's advice.

Maybe orders that were placed in the last couple of days will be automatically upgraded to Penryn, isn't it supposed to be released this week?

They did in the past, I remember there were those who purchased the XPS desktop system with the Pentium D processors that were upgraded to Core Duo processors at no extra cost.

The Clocks go higher in this version - and the baseline clocks are higher too...and there are new multimedia instructions...so if you're encoding video it's good...Also, the new K-insulator (or whatever it's called) is better at blocking power leakage, and the new die is 45nm, so the new thermal wattage rating is 25 watts for medium voltage processors...and the idle power consumption is lower too. - If you're getting a new laptop I would get a penryn.

The penryn won't be a big increase in performance for the M1530 because it can't support the higher clocks they will down clock to 800Mhz.

The advanteges are bigger Cache and lower power consumption

I just purchased the 1330 yesterday(19th) and I just found out about the penryn processors coming out soon on dells, how is the cancellation process with Dell, my shipping date is on Jan 29th, I was thinking about waiting until the 25th or 26th to see if the penryn processors come out and try calling them and ask if I can exchange it.

If you're going to cancel, do it before your unit gets to the final stages of production. They will be less likely to be able to do it once the unit is about to ship. Your unit will more than likely ship before your ESD so if you're unsure, cancel now.
Once your unit has shipped and you receive it, you cannot simply exchange it. You will need to call and get a return authorization to return it and place a completely new order.
