So i've decided to wait for the new Penryn chipset before i buy the sexilicious xps 1530. Apparently it comes out Jan 6, can someone please tell me approximately when dell will make it available for the 1530? I seriously can't wait any longer...I might explode =(
ty =)
Also, since i'm a college student, i signed up for the member discount program and i tried making the 1530 with the 669$(i think) discount and the 12% member discount but the high res screen (1680x1050) and the mid res screen were not available to choose. Think its an error they have yet to fix? or do they not want college folk gettin nicer screens for some reason? Should i call dell and order it on phone and see if they give me the nice screen =)?

who knows when Dell will adopt the Peryn processor, but by the looks of it, they are preparing for it since all the computers are going for steep discounts. However, it really depends on Dell and with nothing leaked so far, I would expect the end of January at the earliest.
-
Penryn is released on the sixth, it takes companies a few weeks to pick it up, so end of January sounds right on. Also consider that it'll be the most expensive time to buy.
-
......for that processor speed you can bet its going to be up there lol
-
Ooh, time for ME to buy a steep discounted good "old" santa rosa platform based notebook!!!
-
Alot of companies already have the Penryn CPU's delivered and stocked ready to go. -
lol I saw a price sheet awhile back and theres 4-6 different models.. starts at 2.0ghz and up to 2.99Ghz. The 2.0 Ghz started at like something like $200-$300 to buy retail.
EDIT:
Found the prices Started at $209 for 2.00 GHz with 12MB Cache. Goes up to $1,172 3.16 GHz with 12MB Cache.
Decent pricing. Issue is will theres be laptops upgradeable to it?
As I know of a few BIOS updates have "support for newer Intel processors" in there change log. So I'm speculating it's a very good chance. Also with the decently low prices, that means they shouldn't cost an arm and a leg to pick the option. Although vendors will mark it up $100 likely. -
Are you sure you're not looking at desktop quad core CPUs? The notebook dual core Penryn's will have a max of 6 MB L2 cache. -
hmm.. looks interesting. Will they update the m1330 too?

I waited too long .. Can't wait anymore.... I ordered on 21st...
the question is how long can YOU wait???? -
-
Bleh. Conroe and Merom were both HUGE step-ups in computing. AMD will hopefully catch Intel on their 45nm process, but for now, I'm planning to be happy with my Merom chips for many years.
-
I remember several new laptops and refreshes of previous models being announced on the day Santa Rosa launched. So I'm sure we'll see many announcments come the 6th, but when will we see these available in retail? I go back to school on the 14th and would like to buy a Penryn notebook before that if possible.

-
I would rather buy Santa Rosa at a deep discount than pay premium for Penryn since it doesn't offer substantial performance boost beside SSE4 and 45nm. I would be more excited with Nehalem, which offers quad core chip for notebook.
Just a thought. -

a wise bill gates once said we only ever need 1mb of storage...or something along those lines =p...and a 1gb processor cost 10k$ 10 years ago...LOL
so yeah im expecting this spanking new laptop will be a paper weight within a few years. -
I didn't know that processor speeds were measured in gigabytes.
I believe that Bill Gates said that we would never need more than 512 kilobytes of memory. -
Kinda, it was more of IBMs ****up when they designed the original architecture...

whoops not processor
-
If you start playing the waiting game, it'll never end and you'll never be satisfied with what you buy. Whatever you buy will be outdated soon, therefore what is the point in waiting and paying a premium for something you don't need for the moment ? By the time you can actually put that extra performance to use, there'll be plenty of cheaper solutions. -
when you look at the success of the Asus Eee which doesn't exactly have cutting edge specs, I'd say my M1330 will still stand up as usable and not be a paper weight in just a few years time no matter how far CPU technology has progressed.

Illegal Operation Notebook Evangelist
I'm guessing Dell will wait until that awesome deal with the instant savings of $649 expires and then release the units with the new processors. So probably at the end of January. By the time they are available, the price of the xps 1530 and other units will be up pretty high with little relief in sight.

Buy what you need when you need it and you'll be fine always
I don't think my machine will be outdated in the next 3-4 years for certain...
As odd as it may seem to some, Dual core chips still aren't the mainstream computing chips.
Although Valve doesn't represent every computer user in the world they offer a good source. As they represent a good portion of the PC gaming market.
http://www.steampowered.com/status/survey.html
According to their latest hardware survey almost 65% of their users are still using Single Core CPUs...
Just because Intel or AMD drops it doesn't mean it is snatched up the same day by users. And software makers won't fully utilize a chip until the majority of users is running it. We can expect Dual Core to take another 1-2 years to make it to the mainstream and another 4-5 years for Quad core to replace that.
I'm sure notebook penetration is a lot slower since the majority of notebook buyers choose the lowest spec machine on the market. There is still quite a large number of those being sold in Single Core configurations. -
I repeat you will not see the new updated XPS's with Intels new 45nm chips till dells old inventory which will be after this huge sale. But do not wait as the gpu options will not change, and the performance difference between the current and the new 45nm is 5-10% at the most.

based on the assumption, that apple will update the mbp line with the penryn cpu supposedly early this jan, doy ou think that the new cpu's will just replace santa rosa as the stock cpu, ro do you think they will be optional, ie. upgrades. I mean, will the t7700 be the stock cpu , and offer the penryn t9500 cpu for another 500$ or something?
-
who knows. I am guessing that since it is not a huge update they will just replace the current line at no extra charge, since every where I read says it will only be about a 5-10% performance increase.
-
it might be an upgrade for a little while until the companies sell out their T7xxx stock.
Penryn or bust!
