I convinced my dad to buy one last night and now I'm tempted to grab one as well. $1300 for Core Duo, 7800Go, and a 17" UWXGA... too awesome to pass up! I don't want to miss out on this, but I also don't want to rush into it... I'm so torn!

Nick...if you can't decide now you can always wait and see what deals they will be running on them. Now with Dell's new return policy it might benefit for you to wait.

Now you cannot return within 21 days unless something malfunctioned or Dell messed up the order. So take your time. :p

Today dell had a 40% coupon of notebooks through EEP. Then there was a stackable $50 off coupon and a 4% off coupon then pay with a dell preferred card and save 3% pay with fatwallet and get 3% off. Thats over 50% off! I wish I didn't miss it. I could have purchased a E1505 for like $600 with the X1400. This deal was on slickdeals.net You should try and wait for somthing like this nick_danger.

I'm aware of that deal, it's $750 the notebook if over $1,999. I'm pretty sure it can't be combined with anything else...
    Where?
    Where?
Sign up through Dell and wait to be approved, I assume?
    What is Fatwallet?

Mine was configured on the 24th, with an estimated ship date of "on or before June 28th"

I checked my order status yesterday, and suddenly they're saying it should be here by TUESDAY!!!1 :D

    Anyway, here are the specs:

Inspiron E1705, Intel Core DuoProcessor T2400 (1.83GHz/667MHz FSB)

    17 inch Wide-screen WXGA+ Display
    1GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm
    256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800
    100GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, English without Media
Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem
    8X DVD+/-RW Drive
    Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps)
80 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
    MS Worksuite 2006
    3 Year Limited Warranty
Dell Wireless 350 Bluetooth Module (2.0+EDR)

Total cost: ~$1380. This was through their EPP site with the 40% off coupon, and 12% off for choosing the 3 year warranty.

    Keep in mind that I'm upgrading from an Inspiron 4000 | PIII 650 | 512MB PC100 | 56k modem, with no built-in ethernet/wireless | 8MB ATI Rage Mobility 2x AGP | 14.1" XGA | etc.

Man , i wonder how good the 7800 can handle FEAR. I just got the E1705 last 2 weeks with X1400, it can only play FEAR at the LOWEST SETTINGS with all effects turn off. BTW, You have better deal than i do, cause i live in TX, i have to pay 111$ for tax actually my dell with the coupon off only 1360$.

    Driver questions...

I received my e1705 last night but I don't yet have the MCE reinstallation CD (in the mail)...when I receive the CD I will reinstall using the guide.

Now this is my first experience with drivers and laptops, with desktops I went to vnidia sites to get motherboard and video drivers, and creative for sound drivers.

I understand the dell video drivers are considered useless and will be trying the newest mobileforce drivers and will get the 7800 back to stock speeds.

BUT, what about all the other drivers? Are these that dell supplies all good enough or are there components that would do better with different drivers?

Sweet, I couldn't find a valid 40% off coupon, so I called Dell and had them view my cart and asked them to apply the 40% off to it rather than try to get the system over $1999 and then use the $750 off. It took about 20 minutes of back and forth and once they understood exactly what I was looking for, they applied the coupon and I got this:

    Inspiron E1705
    Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2300 (1.6GHz/667MHz FSB)
    Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005 w/disc
17" UltraSharp™ Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife™
    512MB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
    256MB NVIDA® GeForce™ Go 7800
    60GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    8X Combo/DVD+RW Drives
    Integrated Audio
    Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps)
    350 Bluetooth Internal(2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate)

    $1058!!!

$1127 after tax (6.5%) and shipping (free)!

HDD and RAM upgrades via Newegg are far cheaper and I also figure that I can upgrade the CPU at a later time as well.

@nick_danger: just a question...you still can get a 40% off if you dont have a coupon, are you sure?

this thing is hot and the coupon for $750 off expires on 5/4...so anyone have EPP (what is this?) or 40% off coupon pls can you show me how to get this? (just call them i assume?)

    thanks :D

All I did was call them and say, "I'm aware of your 40% off deal on the e1705 and I configured a laptop on your website, but I don't have a coupon code and I would really like to buy this laptop today!"

The guy on the phone took my name and other information and pulled up my shopping cart (with the saved laptop configuration) and proceeded to offer me a "manager's special" which was more money and had some other features than what I configured, but I stuck to my bottom line. Either because they make more margin or because it is truly a good deal, they tried to press other features ("free" RAM upgrades and rebates and such), but I made the decision to get out of there at the lowest price possible.

He actually asked me what price I wanted to pay in order to get the sale (and get me off the phone). I told him that if I had the 40% off coupon in hand, I could get the laptop in my cart for about $1000. At first he said that it "wasn't possible to get a laptop like this at a price like that", but then he put me on hold for about 20 seconds to talk to his manager... He came back and applied the 40% off to my configuration and rushed my briskly through the sales process.

I was really impressed, he spoke English for one, he was very prompt, and very polite. If this laptop arrives and works well for me, Dell will have officially won me over.

EDIT: I checked out Dell's EPP thing: dell.com/epp and I don't think I qualified for it... Perhaps I'm wrong and I could have saved some more $$$? I'm content at this point so I'll probably never know.

They do this all the time because the sales people are eager to close the deal not so much based on their skills but by the coupons to entice, aka manager's special. They have #s they have to meet except half of them are poorly trained monkeys whose professionalism are questionable. Some don't even know of their own products - 1 told me they only have trulife option for ALL of their laptops...

    thanks for the info...

actually after i posted this thread i tried to call them and talked to 1 guy... after i told them my configuration for the laptop and would like to have the 40% off the price (which is more than $750), he told me to wait because he needed to ask the technical helpdesk etc etc

i waited for him for 20mins and some other guy took his phone and asked me what i would like. i told him that i was waiting for the first guy but he transfered me to the auto answering machine (the number i called before following lengthy process to get the the actual speaking human). i hang up and called back and left the message at the agent's extension because i really didnt want to explain the whole thing again and again to untrained ppl.

well...i think the deal is so good to stay out. so i will try again when i get home today... wish me luck

If you look at the original post, it was dated in May. I doubt this thread really applies anymore ...
