Hey guys:
Im asking this because i received a very faulty 1420 (with lots of cpu whine, headphone noise, etc), and i asked for a new replacement system.
However, due to the enormous amount of posts complaining about the cpu whine and jack noise in any 1520s, 1420s, 1400's, etc, i am starting to feel a bit pesimistic with regards to my replacement system, and if i do actually get a new 1420 with these issues, i think i am going to call customer service and ask that my money be transferred into the purchase of a new xps1530 as it seems not so much big in comparison with the 1420...
However, if 1530s still have cpu whine problems, i would be very hesitant to do this.
So, the real deal:
You guys out there having 1530s, have you experienced ANY cpu whine or headphone jack noise whatsover??
Or any other common problems that you can identify in the xps1530??
thanks very much

there is no hedphone noise as the jacks are in different places than the inspirons. i not sure about the cpu whine but i think that is also gone

I don't get why everyones complaining and getting all these whine/noise problems. I own a 1520, bought one for my GF and 4 others own one in the office. Zero problems. Bit of a CPU whine but all the notebooks everyones used in the office have that issue, just run RMClock.
As for the 1530, I'll let you know mine should arrive soon. -
And, the cpu whine is extremely annoying, and people shouldn't have to be using "workaround" solutions like using RMClock which also i believe takes like 10% of your battery time when using it.
Its jut being a customer who expects high quality and high standards, as we should all be. Why just stick around with problems wich are not our fault?? -
no no no you misunderstand me.
None of the 1520 I bought/used/know of people that own them have came with these problems. I've caused headphone jack noise myself ripping my machine apart but solved it (not 100% on what I did besides rearrange cables in guidelines).
I completely agree but I think the CPU whine is in Intel's park not the vendors. Because from Voodoo, Alienware to HP, Dell and IBM and Lenovo, All the machines in the office got that CPU whine. -
I had my XPS M1530 for 2 days and it went back to Dell. I could not connect to internet (both wireless and local area connection). Tech Support spent hours to help me out but they couldn't fix the problem. They even asked me to reinstall Windows Vista. After installation, Windows Vista was loaded successfully until I shut down the machine, unplugged the power cord, then plugged it in again and turned the machine on again. This time, DirectMedia was loaded instead of Windows Vista. It said that my hardrive was encrypted or something and it could not load. When I clicked on the exit button on DirectMedia screen, the system was shut down automatically. I tried many times and the same thing happened. Windows was not loaded. I called Tech Support and they asked me to go to SafeMode and you know what, the list of operating system that we can choose to run showing up Windows XP embedded. Yes, Windows XP not Vista. It's really weird. The Tech guy could not explain why Vista was not there, so he recommended me to get an exchange or return it. Now my XPS M1530 is on the way back to Dell. I didn't have a chance to test anything else yet. The first thing I tried was connecting to internet and it failed already. When loading the DVD, it was quite noisy too. Maybe I was not lucky or this new system is not as good as its appearance. By the way, Dell Canada XPS Tech Support are very nice.

None at all (cpu whine or jack noise). My system is nearly perfect (Alps touchpads suck, but that is just nit-picking on my part)....

XP Embedded is the platform for Dell's MediaDirect program. That is how it is able to funtion as it's own OS. Again, not being rude, but were you pressing the power button, or the mediadirect button? -
I didn't get a chance to check headphone jacks because my parents only let me check it out for about 15 min. [partial christmas present].
I didnt notice any whine, except it was a little noisy loading DVDs. I have no problem with this though. -
Yes, for sure it was Windows Vista Home Prenium. I had DVD came with the system. The Tech guy walked me through the installation of Windows and drivers. Before I unplugged the power I restarted it many time because I had to reinstall all drivers and Windows Vista was loaded.
About your second question, I pressed the button with the circle not the button for MediaDirect. I tried it many time with the Tech Support so for sure I was not mistaken -
sleey0, what exactly don't you like about the alps touchpad?

No issues with cpu whine or headset interference. And they give you two headsets (or at least they did for me). No hard drive noise either. I have heard some complaints about loud hard drive noise, may be with a different drive. I got the 7200 rpm drive and works great. I can't believe all the complaints about this laptop. It just works great. The only valid complaint may be the low res screen, but it does not bother me. Ultra high res on a 15 inch screen just seems over kill on such a small screen. Then again maybe I'm getting old and can't see the small screen. I do have my 32" monitor set at 1600x1200 and that is ok.

I only got one pair of headphones, although I did get two remotes. -

People with XPS1530: have you experienced any CPU whine or headphone jack noise whatsoever??
