    PhysX using new 257.21 Laptop drivers on 8600M GT

    Hi,

    I have a GeForce 8600M GT (256Mb RAM) on a DELL Laptop (using Windows 7 x64). I've seen that after removing my old 195.62 driver and installing the brand new 257.21, the PhysX apps cannot use the PhysX GPU mode (they always use the PhysX CPU). FluidMark 1.2.0 always works in CPU mode, even if I force PhysX GPU in nVidia Control panel. Also nVidia PhysX demos like PhysxFluids_by_KennethBugeja cannot use PhysX by GPU (it is disabled). PhysX was perfectly working by GPU with driver 195.62. I've also tried other drivers but only 195.62 and lower can use the GPU for PhysX. I've even downgraded the PhysX in 257.21 driver using the older PhysX 9.09.0814, but with no success. Can anyone help me? Has nVidia disabled GPU PhysX for older GPUs? I see a big performance increase when using GPU PhysX on nVidia demos like PhysxFluids_by_KennethBugeja.

    I've actually had this same exact problem on my 8600M GT for several months as well. I've emailed nvidia about it 2 or 3 times but to no avail. As it turns out, PhysX has stopped working on the 8600M GT on any driver after 196.86. I read somewhere that they had dropped PhysX support on certain mobile cards due to the claim that such cards can't produce the performance needed to run PhysX at an adequate level. Sounds like BS to me, but I also heard that they won't be bringing physx support back either.

    I can't believe it. I'll do a search because it should be possible to unlock this feature again. nVidia should not decide if our card is not fast enough for some tasks. Indeed this is not true because the nVidia demos like PhysxFluids_by_KennethBugeja are extremely faster when running on GPU than on CPU (using old 195.62 drivers). And 3DMark had also a better score when PhysX was done by GPU.
