It seems to be stated fairly regularly that when it comes to the WUXGA Ultrabright TrueLife display for the E1705 line of notebooks the LG screen is far superior to the Samsung alternative. I recently had the privilege of possessing several of each at once so the following two notebooks are ones that seem to be representative of each manufacturer. The first four pictures were all taken with the Windows Blank screen saver at full brightness. They were taken in complete darkness, so the images are dramatically over-exposed to exaggerate any light leakage or non-uniformity.

The notebooks are set up side-by-side so that there is no variation in the camera settings in each comparison. The Samsung display is always on the left, and the LG is always on the right.

This first picture shows the laptops head-on, where it can be seen that both screens exhibit similar non-uniformity patterns, fairly similar luminosity, and comparable light leakage at the bottom of the screen.
The second image, taken from the left, displays the bright spot that appeared in all of the Samsung screens that I saw when viewed from this angle. It also shows the relative decrease in darkness of the LG display.
Image number three, from the right, show what appear to be two identical LCDs.
Images four shows high and low viewing angles, respectively, and it can be seen that the Samsung performs more poorly at the high angle, but that they are still very similar at the low angle.
The fifth and final image is of the notebooks set to a perfectly white Desktop, so as to point out the fact that at maximum brightness, the LG is strikingly more bright than the Samsung, but, although it is difficult to see here, the bottom corners of the LG have significantly more noticable dark spots.

It's important to keep in mind that all of these pictures were taken with very long exposure times, and thusly the actual laptops will only appear like this in complete darkness, to an owl. In daylight and indoor lighting, the light leakage and non-uniformity of both LCDs is not even noticable. Additionally, each manufacturer has its own strengths and its own drawbacks, summarized briefly here:

    Samsung
Biggest Strength: Slightly less prominent and less dynamic light leakage.
Crippling Weakness: Bright spot in center when viewed from some angles.

    LG
Biggest Strength: Higher maximum brightness. Less brightness fluctuation at different angles.
Crippling Weakness: Very dark spots at both bottom corners.

Like I said, I've seen several of each (at least 3), and each fit the above pattern, but 3 is by no means statistically conclusive. It should be enough to declare, however, that the difference is not "night and day" as some will tell you, and as I formerly, and blindly, believed.

Great write-up Lumber, I think I like the LG better. The Koreans sure know there stuff when it comes to electronics. What I would like to see is those things compared to Sony or a Japaneese product. Keep up the good work.

the thing is! most (if not all) lcd PANEL are made in korea by LG, Samsung, Sharp, etc. there are of course different grade of panel, DELL just seems to buy the cheapest one (like usual). most (good) LCD and Plasma tv panel for example are mostly produced by LG or Samsung, the Brand eg. sony, panasonic, pioneer, etc. just buy different grade panel and put different casing and CHIPs to differentiate its product, by all mean when u buy TV the CHIPS plays an important role, such as; improving picture contrast, response time, colour control, etc.

note= there are other manufacturer beside korea... and that is CHINA and TAIWAN (which is probably worse, lol)

I have a samsung screen and I'm pretty happy with it, even though the high viewpoint does seem to be quite a bit off.

    Nice write up.
I had a LG screen and it was PRIME!, but then had some MB issues and dell decided to replace the screen.... with a Samsung :(
I got it back last night and I see horrible light bleeding (compared to my LG) and a few dead pixels.
I am now sending it back (yet again) for more repair and a new LCD (they said they would replace with a LG, but we will see).

So, at least from my experience (3 samsungs and 1 LG), the LG wins out for my preferred display.
Yes, it is a bit dark in the far bottom corners, but I prefer that to white wash of the botton 1/4th of the screen due to Samsungs horrible light bleeding issues.

    Just my opinion.

System Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Monitors -> Plug and Play monitor properties -> Details ->
there on the page it says DISPLAY\XXXXXX\.....

the XXXXXXX identifies the screen you have.

SEC something (eg SEC5557) is Samsung.
I'm not sure what LG is. I'm sure you can search this forum and find out.

My Outlet-based E1705 has the most PERFECT LG screen! No light leaking, at all, beautiful colors, bright whites, barely any darkening in the lower corners.

It's the best LCD i've seen on a Dell in some time!

Looks like you got lucky. I got a LG screen but there is some light leakage on the bottom. I can barely notice it in windows though so unless I have a dark screen I'm just going to ignore it.
