I've had my e1705 for a while now, and i just recently tried to play one of my DVDs i made when i first got my DVD burner a while ago. every program i try to play it in comes up with an error message, and closes. Media Center, Windows Media Player, even my 3rd party WinDVD player stops, as well as Nero's movie player. whats up? do i not have drivers or will these DVD drives not read burned DVDs? i highly doubt the 2nd because the thing burns them, why cant it read them?

Try some differnet discs. Quality varies greatly.

Usually when having playback issues, the media is a good place to start. What drive is it?

i would say it's either the media or you burned them incorrectly (since you say it's every disc you burned) ?

do they work on other players ?

You didn't state it, so I have to ask: does it play retail DVDs? Do you have a DVD codec installed? What method did you use to make the DVD copy?

ok, i tried a burned DVD that works on a standalone DVD player, as well as my desktop. It didn't work, and i got the standard message " Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" it does that with every program. Media Center, Media Player, and my 3rd party WinDVD. whats odd is that it will play about 2 seconds of video, then close. So i got a commercial DVD, that i know plays on the standalone DVD and my desktop. It doesn't work on the e1705 either. I get the same error message. So is it my codecs? if so, why will it play the few seconds, then close?

That is because Window Media Player cannot play DVDs by default. Try VideoLan. It is free and plays most anything. Did you not get DVD playback software?

Did you try device manager to check for any yellow question marks?

When was the last time player worked right and what has been installed or deleted?

It really sounds like you have a missing, turned off or bad driver or resource because you mentioned none of your player programs work.

If you don't know how to trouble shoot you can get in trouble real fast.

If your lost, back up work, music, ect. files only then break out your System Restore disks or get them from Dell. Much easier than guessing online!

well, i did a full system restore, erased everything and started from scratch. loaded all my drivers per southerngirl's post.

Device manager has no yellow question marks. Also, all my versions of Media Player have been able to play DVDs... odd. My friend just got an e1705 too, and he's able to play DVDs, but he hasnt re-formatted his computer.

Is there DVD Playback Software that came on my drivers disk that i ordered with the XP MCE disks?
Or is there anywhere to download new codecs?

i got VLC today, and it plays both commercial and my burned DVDs. thats neat. so... how can i get media player and media center to play DVDs?

if media direct cant play the dvds, then why even have it?

    any ideas?

Odd, my media player used to play DVD's as well by selecting DVD, nothing to add. WMP still shuts down when you select the proper DVD drive letter?

    C'mon Mail Man...

i just had an earth shattering idea. so, i never installed a driver for my 8x dvd burner. could this be my problem? on dell's driver download page it says its the "TSST TS-L532B slim 8x DVD+/-RW"
mine is the TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L532B, as it says in device manager. is that the correct driver for me, cuz the dell one says slim in it.

You shouldn't need a driver, other than the one installed with Windows.
