Hi all. I recently upgraded my Windows XP Inspiron E1705 wich has the Nvidia 7800 GO card to Windows Vista Ultimate edition, and now after upgrading, some of the games lags, look bad. I did a clean install and then installed the released Vista 32 bit Nvidia driver from Dell.com. I also played the game using the Windows Vista Nvidia drives and some games still played really bad. One game in particular is Medieval 2. The sound and gameplay keeps laging. And also, the demo of Supreme commander under vista lags. I reisntalled my Windows XP with all the Xp drivers and ran the same games again with the same settings and they run good. So, Why does Vista sucks with games? I tried a different Nvidia drivers for it, but no luck. I thought that Vista was good for PC games. I guess not. Anybody having the same Problem playing games under Windows Vista???

I have E1705 with dedicated Nvidia 7800 GO card.
    Intel Centrino Duo processor 2HGz.
    1 gig Ram.

Vista utilizes more memory that XP number 1 - so you will need a RAM upgrade to help smooth out your gaming issue since games run from memory - 2gb at least would be suggested -
Vista uses a lot more services that XP and drivers are yet to be optimized for vista - also it is geared for DX10 (although it runs DX9L for DX9 games)
Upgrade your RAM and that should fix your problem, that way your not running so much of it from your HD (virtual memory)

Immature drivers are the main problem. If gaming is a prority, you should stick with XP for a while.

More than 1 gig of ram? The game recoomended setting is way below 1 gig. I have 1200. I thought that with Vista, the game would be better. I guess not. So, for now, ill stick with XP.

Vista is new, drivers are shoddy compared to xp, and vista is much more demanding of system resources, 2 gig is reccomended for vista, 3 or 4 wouldnt hurt. From first looks it looks like 3 gig will become the sweet spot for ram, which is bad news for a lot of users as most laptops top off official support at 2gb.

Game recommendation may be way below 1GB but those recommendations are under XP, right ? Vista eats up lot of memory leaving very little for the game, and then the swap file kicks in making everything slower. As Iceman0124 said, drivers are still very immature for Vista, give it some time. In the meantime stick with XP for games.

Don't you know about gaming performance issues of Vista ? Do a small Google search and you will find plenty of benchmarks showing that Vista is noticeably slower than XP.

it seems to me like the drivers are already pretty good. Most games I've read about are just below or on par with XP

    http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/01/29/xp-vs-vista/page4.html#3d_games

Here, COD2 is within 1.6fps, and far cry is down 6 fps. Unreal 04 is much lower, but it is an older game...

I completely disagree that 3 GB of ram is the sweet spot. While using vista, 2 GB is nice, but while running a game, vista doesn't eat up as much. And don't forget about ReadyBoost. While running company of heroes under vista, gamespot found a 50fps increase (while using 512MB RAM), an 11 fps increase (while using 1GB RAM), and a nine fps increase (while using 2GB RAM). These increases were by using a 1 GB USB flash memory (you can use up to 4GB I believe).

I've also noticed that while the preformance gain is great while going from 512MB RAM to 1 GB, it is less going from 1GB to 2GB, and very little preformance gain going from 2GB to 3GB or 4GB, although load times will be shorter.
