I have 2 problems. First, if I close the lid of my laptop, when I open it again, the screen stays off... Nothing I do works and I end up having to turn the computer off with the power button to be able to do anything again.

Secondly, I've reformatted the hard drive & ever since, I haven't had the options of stand-by or hibernate. In the shut down menu, standby is greyed out and only restart & shutdown are available. How can I get these options back?

If it will help, I have an Inspiron 6400 and am running Windows XP Pro.

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

For the screen issue, I would suggest the following hotfix (please note, this is oriented more toward hibernation issues, but it has also been successful with issues like the one you describe):

It is important to make sure that you have reinstalled all of your drivers. Generally, hibernation and standby options will not be present if you do not reinstall your chipset and video drivers. Just reinstalling XP is not enough to get your system performance where it should be. If you no longer have your Driver CD-ROM, Dell's support site has download links for all drivers.

I have similar lid closing problem in my 1420. So far, none fix the problem. Tried video driver update, chipset driver update, and etc. etc. But what I really thought is the power supply issue. Because couple times when I plug in power supply my laptop freeze. However, I have e1405 which never have this problem and it's also running vista. I really think this maybe a hardware issue!!!
