    G'day mates,

I've been sucking in heaps of information for weeks on end while trying to decide whether to buy a Core Duo, wait for the Turion x2, or now wait for the Merom.

Can someone please test what happens when a Merom is dropped into a 6400/1505? If it runs just fine (including 64 bit mode), I will go out and buy a laptop today.

I'm sure a lot of other people are waiting to pull the trigger on a coreduo purchase until details of merom-compatibility are sorted out. If we could get someone with access to an engineering sample to actually test it out, it would be extremely helpful!

    Thanks mates,

Like plenty of other people have already written, this won't even be possible to try until the motherboard manufacturers and/or OEM manufacturers (like Dell) issue BIOS upgrades that specifically add Merom processor support.

The new Intel processors aren't even readily available to the public yet.

Well, according to Intel, it will work on Yonah platforms with only a BIOS update, so I can't imagine either Dell, Intel, or an enthusiastic third party not supplying a one. Like Kegobeer said, the chip is not shipping yet so there's no way to guarantee 100% that it will work with our laptops, but there are engineering samples floating around the web that simply drop in and work with existing Intel chipsets. I, for one, bought my CoreDuo notebook in anticipation of a Merom upgrade.

In all honesty, I wouldn't even consider a Turion64 X2, it's won't even be close to the Merom in any benchmark. I may be saying that arrogantly, but I have no reasons to believe otherwise given the flagship Athlon's struggle to even keep up with Core Duo. Of course, I'm only talking 32-bit...

@Whitney - that's an engineering sample and a non-Dell machine. While that thread is a good read, we can't apply it to the Dell laptops.

Until Dell states something official, there is no telling if the E1505/6400 will support Merom. Yes, some user have successfully put Merom in their system, but again these are just experiments until Dell releases more information.

With Merom public release date so close, I see all current lines of notebook will support Merom. I could be wrong about this but there haven't been any hint of rumor going around Dell is going to change their notebook models. Since big corporations are good at purposely releasing their "TOP SECRETE” next generation consumer products, I feel like we all are in good chance that our Yonah system will be upgradable to Merom. :)

As long as you have the Intel 945 PM/GM chipset , MEroms should work fine with ur existing system .. I dont really know what chipset the E1505 Uses .. anyone ?
