    What's up,
I just got my new E1505 yesterday and everything is going great. The only problem is that every 30 seconds my arrow has the time glass next to it as if it's reading something constantly. It doesn't really slow down anything but I'm kind of wondering why it is doing this. Well any help is appreciated.

there is a lot of junk installed on Dells by default. I would suggest you to reinstall the OS if you can.

Yeah, I'd also recommend a good reinstall to get rid of all that junkware installed on your notebook by Dell. SG's made a guide to do this at the top of the Dell forum.

The most likely cause is Google Desktop. There have been several compalints from users that are similar to yours, and they figured out that Google desktop was running a scan every few seconds.

wait, but even after you uninstall Google desktop, there are still a couple of files left that make the hourglass appear... i forgot the names of the files but maybe SG can tell you...

The only thing that I know of is Google desktop. I'm not saying that will solve everything, but I would start there at least.

Don't forget to uninstall Virus and Symantac Ghost software. E1505 with 512MB ran fine with uninstallation of all those 3 mentioned software...

If you're familiar with and comfortable with registry hacking, try this:

    Go To HKLM\SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\

Rename the RUN key to DONTRUN.

Create a new key called RUN to replace the old one.

    Reboot.

It will both load and run a lot faster, then you can put any desired RUN items back into th new RUN.

Also, as mentioned ditch McAfee. It's a cure almost worse than the disease.

I've settled on AVG antivirus (free version), Sunbelt Kerio Firewall (free version). Both are nearly non-impacting on system performance.

McAfee is a hog and Windows firewall isn't really a firewall at all but just a stealth engine.

I had a pain removing McAfee. I had to stop several services before it would clear out of Dodge. I wonder if rebooting in Safe mode would have made that easier.

    What's up,
Thanks for all the helpful advice! I was planning to do the full reformat, but this is my first laptop so I want to get familiar with it before I possibly mess it all up! I went with the unistallation/registry cleaner route and I eventually got the hour glass to stop haunting my new laptop (and yeah I had to stop google desktop and a couple other things to stop it!).
Well thanks again to everyone for taking the time to reply! I'm also in awe that southern girl (who I remember was one of the first to get the new e1505 and asked alot of helpful questions at the time which eventually showed up in her great FAQ) has appeared to answer my question! I'm not worthy! haha jk.
    Later,
    Jay

P.S. I uninstalled a couple programs including McCaffe, Wild Tangent, Corel, Symantec Ghost, and few others. Is this much activity enough to warrant a defragmentation of my hard drive in order to organize and hopefully gain a little more speed out of my computer?

LOL, actually, I don't have a E1505, I have the 9300. LOL, not really sure of who you are thinking of.

If you need help with formatting, send me a PM. I should be available to do walkthroughs all this week.
