I'm going to be installing XP on my Vostro 1500 when it arrives. I'm currently slipstreaming my copy XP with the required SATA drivers, but I need to know which ones to use. If you have a Vostro 1500 with the GM965 chipset (i.e. with Intel's GMA X3100), could you tell me which southbridge it has, please?

If you go to device manager, and expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI controlers", it should say.

I think I've narrowed it down to:

    Intel(R) 82801HEM SATA RAID Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E)

    or

    Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M)

I'm guessing it's the latter, but I don't know if I can include both drivers in my slipstreamed XP, or whether it would cause a conflict.

Your help would be very much appreciated!!

    Thanks in advance.

edit: I've just found out that for the Vostro 1400, you need both drivers, or you get a BSoD. Unless anyone knows differently, I'll just do the same for my 1500.

You should give vista a try. It is great!

I've been using it since my laptop stopped working a couple of weeks ago. It's okay, and certainly not as bad as I thought it was going to be, but I can't see that it offers me anything more than XP did, and I'm familiar with that. It also uses more resources, though that shouldn't be a problem with the spec I'm getting.

Vista does look nicer, but I've just come across the Royale Noir XP theme, which smartens XP up nicely!
