Hi, I need some advice about my Dell Inspiron 1545 Vista 32 Laptop not charging. I have a new battery installed and for some reasons at times it appears to charge and at other times it's not charging. At this time the computer is on/plugged in and when I click the battery icon on the bottom task bar icon it states "22% available (plugged in, not charging)". I had the computer shut off, but plugged in and it didn't charge the battery. Any ideas as to where to start looking? I appreciate any advice.

Is the new battery OEM or aftermarket? If it's aftermarket, I wouldn't be surprised...

What model of laptop is it, and what kind of AC adapter are you using (look on the AC adapter and read the model number, it should be something like PA-12 or PA-3E)?

Where did you get the new battery from?

Hi, it's a Dell Inspiron 1545 with Vista 32 OS. It has a PA-21 adapter. It did charge the battery up to 71% yesterday but, nothing since then.

Someone on another forum recommends going into devices and removing the items listed here's his instructions: "The second solution that I’d recommend a lot more is to open up your Device Manager (usually a right click on your Computer/My Computer) and remove all battery related devices from the Device Manager. Then after you’ve done that, right click again and select “Scan for Changes”, which should reinstall the proper services and allow for your laptop to charge again". I don't think that's a good idea...any comments on this?

Hi, I made a mistake on the battery....it is not a Dell battery it is a:

    LBD-D40-5200
    Capacity: 5200mAh
    Voltage: 11.1V
    Rating: 58 wHr

My Mom bought it from Battery Depot....she stated she got a Dell battery...that's where the confusion came from.

Hi, I need some opinions on Lap Top Battery. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with 32 Vista OS. I just changed the battery and I'm having problems charging the battery. It charged the battery up to 71% yesterday and since then it has not charged the battery. Could this aftermarket battery be the problem:

    Battery Depot:
    LBD-D40-5200
    Capacity: 5200mAh
    Voltage: 11.1V
    Rating: 58 wHr

For about 4 months my old Dell battery was dead and I was using only the AC adapter for power. I recently had to re-install widows vista due to my sound stopped working. I ran into a problem with the install because the battery was dead during the install reboot. I installed the new battery it charged up to 71% and I was able to re-install vista with no issues. Now the new battery won't charge anymore.

    I appreciate any advice.

Ah, yep. If it is an aftermarket one, then there is your answer... The majority of them will run into some kind of fault. Like mine for my D620, that won't hold a charge after about 9 months.

There is nothing really we can do. You could try to recalibrate it, just look it up on Google.

That does look to be an aftermarket battery. I would return it if possible, check eBay for OEM genuine Dell batteries. Here's an OEM used battery:

There some batteries on eBay claiming to be new OEM genuine Dell batteries in Asia, which I'm betting are probably fake.

Yes, most likely, I bought one off eBay from Hong Kong that claimed to be "Genuine Dell Battery" it wasn't...

    Follow this guide:

Ok thanks....I'll switch to battery power only and being that I'm at 21% it should drain quickly and the computer will shut off. I'll plug in the computer to charge the battery and this should recalibrate the battery. I'll give it a try any other recommendations before I begin? Thanks for the help.

I just tried the battery recalibration and no luck. Battery is down to 3%. Has to be the battery or AC adapter.

you cant recalibrate it since it doesnt charge..

Chances are it is your AC adapter .. but seeing as it is an aftermarket batt... cant be sure
problem is really really common - just google it and see how many hits you get.

sometimes a bios update fixes it

Similar problem found on other systems and in some cases it can be fixed by: unplugging the AC adaptor, removing the battery and holding the power button down for ~20 seconds. Replace battery and retest. I know its a crap shoot but it worked on my Alienware M17x.
