I have looked at the Dell 1525 and am concerned about the durability of the soft rubberised paint on the colored lid.

So, I thought I would ask you guys about your experience with any of the Dell colored laptops: Inspiron 1420, 1525 or 1720, or XPS M1330 or M1530.

I am looking specifically for comments about the soft paint, not the hard glossy white paint, nor the available decals. Thanks in advance.

I have a yellow Inspiron 1525. Well the rubberized paint isn't coming off. It's actually getting color transfer. I put it in a black leather laptop bag. The interior has a black padded polyester lining (pretty standard). The fabric color is transferring to the laptop cover. It looks awful. I am fighting with Dell right now on standing behind their product. They are telling me it's my fault for putting it in the bag because it's not one of their bags.

Well, they do have a point. Who knows what your bag is made out of.

I have no scratches on my 1520 lid. I move it usually once a day either to a study lounge, class, another room, etc. There are some oil smudges on it though.

There are 2 1420s in my house. 1 red and 1 pink. neither leaves the house so they get no wear. They both look as good as the day they arrived.

Mines perfectly fine here too.. Although they do scratch easy if you take a needle or knife to them, or anything as sharp. Although any paint would scratch from things like that.

Honestly, only having mine a few weeks, the biggest issue I'm having with the color is fingerprints and smudges. It's hard to keep it clean when you take it everywhere like I do.

However, a quick wipe with a moist soft cloth generally clears up the issue right away.

I got tired of having a pink laptop (I'm a dude) so I bought a skin from skinit.com. So when I do get rid of the laptop, it will look in great shape.

I have a 1525 with a microsatin midnight blue cover. Got it 2 months ago. I use a padded case (bought from walmart) and tote the laptop back and forth from campus every day.

The cover is in great shape. No scuffs at all, color remains as it was from day 1.

My only problem problem is that the pads separating the lid from the base are not sufficient when the laptop is closed. Because there's not enough pads on the and the lid flexes quite easily, the edges around the screen and base make contact and become scratched up very quickly. Stated in another way, if you squeeze the closed laptop the slightest bit, the lid and base scratch against each other. I've never had this problem with any other laptop. It looks like crap and I havent been able to prevent it even when being really careful.

I've had two Inspiron 1420s Spring Green. One was owned from September of 2007 to July 2008. After this one's GPU died, Dell replaced it with my second one, which I've owned from August 2008 to the present.

I take my laptop to class daily, so it is put into a notebook sleeve and tossed around.

The original laptop's colored lid was terrible. After one month in school, the finish began to wear off at the corners. It looked like it was peeling and worse, it was a rust color as though the finish itself had rusted.

My new one is much better. When I opened it out of the box, it felt like a much more durable finish and more rubberized than the first. The finish doesn't look at all different from the day I received it and has not peeled or rusted.

I think there might have been problems with the colored lids in early batches when they were still working out the kinks, but now the quality appears to be top-notch.

I have a studio 17 with the midnight blue colour lid, apart from finger prints, mine looks as new still, its only 6 weeks old though.
