I ordered a Midnight Blue Inspiron 1520 on July 11th. The estimated ship date is July 30th, and I have next day shipping.
I am hoping to receive the computer before Saturday, august 4th, because I am going up to visit my grandma after her knee surgery to help her out around the house and teach her to use a computer. I figured it'd be better if I had my own computer there to demonstrate things and show her how nice it is (she has a 10 year old dell and we are trying to get her to upgrade).
What do you guys think? Will I get it in time?

Mine was supposed to ship today, but no, it's pushed back to 8/1 now.

I'd be really surprised if you recieved it by that date. The blue color is backordered (as are most colors)

Sorry, but I don't think it will be there in time... if it ships right on the estimated date, you'll probably get it just in time, but knowing Dell, it'll probably get pushed back... but good luck!

edit: uh, 88gmc, your ship date's not actually 08, right? lol just checking...

When I call the order status number it still says it is in production, in the build stage.
Is the call system actually accurate? Does this mean it won't ship on monday?

You get your laptop 2 weeks ahead of schedule if you pick an unpopular model. My Dell Latitude D630 was shipped and delivered long before the expected delivery date.

I ordered July 7th, and have been delayed once. Many people have been pushed to 8/1, so Im hoping there was a shipment of common parts that means they will all be shipped by then.

JdBan - why dont you change your shipping address and have them ship it to your grandmothers house, and then just get it when you go there? Then you wont stress as much. If it hasnt been shipped by the time you leave your grandmas house, just change it back to yours.

Does your grandma live in the same state? (assuming you are in the US) - does grandma's state have a different tax amount?

    Things to think about anyway...

Mine was ordered on the 8th, and has since been delayed until the 30th for shipping. I honestly dont think it will even ship then as its still in the build stage (been there for over two weeks). Theres something about the Midnight Blue color... most blue orders are delayed.

I was speaking to one the the guys in my IT Dept at work who does the purchasing from Dell for my company. He said the end of Dell's 2nd quarter is July 31st, so they will be doing everything possible to get as many laptops shipped on or before July 31st so they can count them as 2nd quarter sales. (I guess Dell's fiscal year goes from Feb 1st and ends on Jan 31st).

That being said, if they don't have the parts (aka: LCD shortage, or Color lid shortage) then they won't be able to ship them.

Yesterday mine said it was in the boxing stage.. usually means in transit over the Pacific to Dell facility in US. Today Dell called and gave me Fed X tracking number and it will arrive Monday. So once you are in the boxing stage.. its coming. And should be on carrier in one to three days depending if weekends are involved. I would say that if it does not say boxing stage today, then it won't ship fly over until Monday. Somebody said the 747 only flies on week days with like 25000 laptops or something.. I read it somewhere on this forum. So if it does not box today.. then maybe it flies over on Monday.. boxing stage... and would be put on carrier Tuesday at earliest.

Now this is just based on my overnight fed x 1420 system and what one user said about the 747's loading up 25k laptops mon -Fri.. I think that is what he said. I can't seem to find that thread it was kind of interesting to get real info how Dell operates.

i was told i would receive mine way before the edd as my delivery address is of the same city where their warehouse is situated. but i guess this was just a ploy to keep me happy and satisfied. so i guess you can only hope.

Yeah, she lives in the same state. The problem is, that I was hoping to have the computer by the 3rd, so I could get it all setup and then drive up there and use it to show her how to use a computer. I'm only going up there for the weekend (+ monday), so changing the delivery address to her house would be a little pointless, unless I knew it was going to be delivered on that exact monday.

Thanks, thats helpful. Now I know that once it switches to the boxing stage, it's on its way.

As of today (friday the 27th) at 10:00 PM Pacific time, the phone status system says that the order is still in the production-build stage.
Its frustrating that its been saying the same thing for the whole time...

Supposedly it will hit testing stage after build stage. Then boxing and finally shipping. I missed the testing stage.. I called once a day and the testing stage must have been between calls. Only thing I suggest is just keep calling the 1 800 automated status number 1800-433-9014. This is the most accurate information and you can talk to reps all day long and they probably won't know more then what the automated message tells you. About all you can do is try to get them to expedite your system. If they do, it may speed things up. Stick in there.. I think these new dells will be worth the wait.

I really think it depends on whether or not you lucked out and got your lid before they hit their shortage. I'm guessing that's not the sort of thing they'd tell you, though.

A couple of days ago, I talked to a guy who said he'd get my order "expedited" (I already had free next day shipping).
I don't even know whats going on anymore...

My new estimated ship date is the 30th, was originally the 8th, and since Im still in the build stage as of right now, Im fairly positive I will receive my second delay, which I really can't afford because I need it ASAP before I leave for college.

I really wish I could get my 1520 during early August so I have time to play some PC games before college. I don't trust dell's estimated ship date of "august 7th".

i think you mean you ordered 7/17

And we have almost identical setups. How do did you get the 3 year warranty for only $15 more than mine? (I have 1 year warranty)
