My Mom has cratered her OS twice in a month since getting her Inspiron 1525. Malware galore. I haven't seen it that bad in years. That is with McAffe Security Center running. I don't know what it is but until I figure it out, I need to make a ghost image or some other sort of backup before I hand it off to her so I can recover without doing a full OS install. I've tried fixing with all the usual advice but at this point I'm looking for insurance not advice for fixing.

I would use Ghost and BartPE to boot the laptop but BartPE isn't seeing disks after I boot. I guess it doesn't have the needed disk controller drivers and I'm not looking to try and update my BartPE disk.

Anyone have a favorite tool for booting/backing/restoring up disks outside of the OS?

I use Acronis True Image Echo Workstation. If you leave it installed you can schedule it to make automatic updated images. This way you can restore to the most recent image that isn't cratered. Of course, the Echo Workstation is like $800, but the home edition can be gotten for less, or really less.

Acronis True Image 7 is freeware. You can get a key off their website if your register.

Use dd to make drive images in Knoppix?
Or just use Ubuntu and forget the spyware problem.

Vista has a backup and restore utility. I use it every couple weeks to image the drive.

I use this too, it works great. One catch though-The CompletePC Backup feature only is enabled in Vista Business or Ultimate. :(
