So, it looks like he used an old apple microphone ( that's a solution?!). I don't know for sure, but he might be using an apple "plaintalk" mic - which would be interesting, because these were actually "powered" mics, which had a slightly longer pin.

...It's not so much a solution, as it is an indication that the problem CAN be remedied with the existing hardware (which is slightly unfortunate, as the chances of Dell doing anything about it are now miniscule).
We should start a photo thread of mic plugs that people have used successfully.
I think Futureshop, Best Buy, and the Sony store are going to get MIGHTY tired of me buying and returning mics in the next little while.

I got my machine a couple of weeks ago and tested all the sound play and recording and have nothing wrong at all.
I would be suprised if anyone has bought a machine recently and has this problem. I think it was pure and simple a driver problem in the first place. I have read others using and changing to intel sound drivers and not Sigmatel and the problem vanishes.
