    Hey hey,

    Boring bit:
Ok... first of all this is my first post on this forum. I've only been browsing this forum for a few hours (and for the life of me could not find a search function for the forum???) in search of some more information on a particular gremlin that seems to come along with any Dell Inspiron laptops with the 7900GS video card. I was inspired to sign up and post on this forum after about the 100th blue screen with this error and my goal is to hopefully help people who encounter and google search (or whatever search engine people use) this problem to find the solution quickly and easily.

Many people have speculated, in individual posts on many forums, that the error in question may be related to ram, motherboard, video card or some combination of all of these. In some cases, replacing one or more of these three critical parts seems to fix the problem, at least temporarily.

Also, I don't think my solution is definitive but I haven't seen a case where it hasn't helped.

Interesting bit:I'm pretty sure I've found a way to delay and maybe even prevent the error from popping up.

The error seems to be primarily caused by heat, particularly built up over time. Over time, the error becomes more and more frequent (it built up on my comp over a couple of months). This would suggest that some physical part of the laptop is deteriorating.

blah blah blah, basically... By using a large refrigerated fan, and a small stand that does not obstruct air flow, I can keep the laptop temp down enough that the laptop never crashes, even during maximum performance over long periods of time. I also used a program called I8kFanGUI to max the fan speeds. This combination seems pretty bulletproof atm.

If I take away the stand or the fan for more than about 60 seconds while playing a new-ish game (like Grid, or UT3) or watching a DVD the laptop will crash... and it can be hard to get into windows again. If I'm really unlucky and the laptop bluescreens while it's hot, I sometimes have to wait for it to cool down again or it will just crash again once I gets into windows.

So there you have it... a possible solution that is cheap and relatively easy. I was sick of seeing people say "replace this, replace that... run lengthy memtests etc etc" :p

(yeah so most people probably don't want have a noisy fan and a laptop sitting at a wierd angle all the time but I guess it's better than dealing with constant crashes and things like that... people who don't get the problem as severely can just use a stand or a small fan or something.. that may be enough... I think my laptop is extremely screwed hence the extreme solution :p)

To those who are a little more experience with laptop internals:

When I pulled apart my laptop to clean it, I noticed that the heatpipes between the gfx card and the tiny heatsink next to the fan had tiny cracks in a couple of the bends. I don't think they would have been deep enough to leak the heat transfer fluid out but if that is the case, then a permanent solution might be to replace those heatpipes with working ones? just a thought and as I said, I doubt that anything did leak out (I'm sure the fluid would leave some evidence of it leaving??)

Sorry if my grammar is getting worse as the post gets longer but I'm kinda sick of writing now :) Please discuss and let me know if this helps..
(and again, my apologies if a thread like mine already exists, but i could NOT find a search function)
