Okay so I'm reasonably pissed off this morning when I woke up, went to reach for my laptop [inspiron 1520] and remembered that somehow last night I managed to snap one of the hinges. Well I say 'I' but in all truth I did nothing but close the lid normally... no wires caught in it, have never dropped it, never picked it up by the screen or done anything to my knowledge that would cause this to happen.
Anyway my annoyance comes with knowing that it *looks* like accidental damage and I'm not covered.
So I was wondering if anyone knows how likely it is that if I ring dell monday morning they will be willing to do anything to help... since as I said... it's actually not 'accidental damage' the thing snapped/parted on its own basically just through normal use.
Also has anyone had this happen or do you think it could be repaired? [pictures included]

looks like only piece you need is LCD bezel, and back panel.

Try to order it from Ebay, or Dell spare parts.

You know what? It seems like you also broke the bottom housing on the LCD hinge.

It's pain to replace the bottom housing because you have to take everything out, and put back in.

It's hard to believe you just closed it, and went to sleep judging from the pic though.

It seems like you tried to close the LCD panel when it wasn't supposed to.

Judging by 'other' pictures? Such as?
I care about my notebook to no end, I look after it better than anything else I own. Literally all that happened was I shut the lid normally because I was about to pack it away before I went out and heard a loud cracking noise... as I opened it back up again to see what had happened the thing just parted way....
I didnt even shut or open it quickly.... and it's been fine for the last 3 months with no signs of weakness in the area.

I admit it looks badly damaged which is why it's annoying me.... because I know that I havent done anything and I always pack it away before I go anywhere or take it with me where I'm going so no-one else could have touched it either...

The side that's been broken is where the LCD connects to the bottom housing. The bottom housing is made out of magnesium alloy and not that easy to break...

Anyways, w/o complete care, you would have to buy few parts from spare parts, or Ebay.

You see the scuff mark in the middle (bottom part) of the LCD panel?

It seems like something may have been there, and you tried to close it, and the left side of the bottom housing gave up.

my 8200 did that too. It was out of warranty but they will cover it. They even asked me about my hinges when i called them once, it was sort of strange at the time. Anyway, even if they say no you can pick up a new bracket on ebay for pretty cheap usually.

Ahhhh, everyone is an authority. What would the poster have to gain by coming on a forum and lying to you? Give me a break.

To the OP: I've also had something like that happen with a notebook lid. Plastics, and even magnesium alloys (although I was under the impression that the 1520 was plastic) sometimes have faults and are prone to cracking. The hinge assembly is a pretty high stress area, especially if it's opened and closed a few times daily. Dell is usually very accomodating, it's definitely worth it to give them a call and see what they can do for you. The chance is fair that they may fix it.
