Assuming they can check that it is still working, can I upgrade the warranty? I asked Dell this question but listening to their customer service reps has proven to be extremely stupid, so I'm asking you guys.

I believe if you're still covered under the initial warranty, you can upgrade it. If the machine is out of warranty, Dell will not offer anything further and you'll need to look to a 3rd party for warranty/insurance.

Thanks. Also wanted to know: say I got a refund on my Dell but still had the harddrive. Would I be able to use the hard drive for any other laptop? (Of a different brand)

I'm assuming that you could, but one time I took an HP DV9500 and tried to put a WD 250 GB hdd into it FROM an HP DV2500 series, the pins were like opposite...

Most likely you could use it elsewhere, but I'm not an HDD pro. Others correct me if I'm wrong!

It's possible to get extra warranty protection after buying a laptop if the warranty hasn't expired, but I should warn you that it will be substantially more expensive than buying it originally.

As for your second question, relatively recently the standard for laptop hard drive interfaces has changed. Now most machines come with SATA drives, whereas older laptops may use ATA drives. These can't be interchanged, but otherwise you should be fine.
