I reinstalled a fresh copy of XP Pro on my Vostro and wiped all the previous partitions, minus the small recovery/emergency/diagnostic partition or whatever it is. Anyway, the idea popped into my head that maybe I could map the Media Direct button to boot a Linux distro on another partition. Thoughts?

You can do that, I use it like that.
You need the rmbr.exe tool in the MD CD to set it up. -
You should search the forums/Google. I believe this has been discussed before. In fact, I know there's a thread on it somewhere. As mentioned, you use the MD CD to select which partition it boots.

I'm having issues with the on-site search or I would have. Google yielded info that it's possible but not much in the way of a full-scale tutorial, but I'll give it another go.
