Just ran 3Dmark06 on my XPS M1530 with out of the box settings and got a reasonable score of 4306 with the Dell Recommended power profile. I then changed this to High Performance and got a lower, although not by much, score.

    Anyone care to explain.

How much lower? If not much then just the randomness of the testing. In the recommended settings likely goes to performance when needed so scores should be about the same. If you want to get a better idea if something is going on, run 3 times at each setting then compare. Once is not enough to draw a conclusion.
