Is it possible to power on the Vostro 1500 without opening it up? I ask this because I'd like to power it on while connected to external monitor, mouse, and keyboard. It would be nice to just be able to pop it on without fussing with opening it up since while on my desk it will be somewhat out of reach.

Laptop have a switch when closed, goes into standby or sleep, so I don't think it's possible. If it was possible, it would be a battery drain, and most people forget to turn it off, not to mention the heat buildup.

I don't think it is possible to press the power button while the lid is closed, but i've heard about ACPI which could automatically power up a system as soon as a key on the keyboard is pressed. I'm not sure if the Vostro has this feature.

systems with the docking station can do this, however the vostro/inspiron line does not have this feature.

I'm in the same boat on this one. As far as turning it from a dead power off, the only way is to open the lid.

Or else constantly keep it in sleep mode and power it on with the keyboard.

Just something you may want to know, that the keyboard area is one of the few areas on a laptop that is an intake for air for cooling the system.

I think I can be of help, go to control panel and then power option, under Vista, (I see that you have XP but see if you have the option available to you), it will have a option to select what the laptop does when the lid is closed. You can set it to "Nothing", and you will be able to close the lid without it going into sleep/shutdown.

yes we know this, however it is the opposite of what we are looking for. he wants to turn on his pc without opening the lid, we know you can shut it without shutting off. like dells docking stations they have a seperate power button for turning it on and off while it is docked. I dont think it is possible for these vostros because there is no docking station option.
