Ok i have a 1420 inspiron, had it for about 2 years, i push the button it acts like its powering up but the screen shows a light black instead of the dell powering up logo, i evan installed vista ultimate as a new os and the same thing, it will work every once in a while, but the i ran the diagnostics on it and it got to the part where it does the video test it said something about the resolution and did the same thing with the light black screen, im out of ideas, im thinking its the video card but not sure, if it is the video card can it be replaced or fixed?

it sounds like a video card problem but to confirm the issue hook it up to a external monitor and see if it does the same thing if so it could be the video card and if the laptop has an integrated video card like an intel integrated card it could be a system memory problem too. in most cases the video cards are built in to the motherboard even if you have a nvidia or ati card but I have seen some laptops that do have cards that can be replaced but it is very few..
