Sorry if this sounds a bit stupid as I'm a newbie but where in the format guide it says:

    3) Call Dell and request the software CDs
    * Cyberlink PowerDVD (DVD decoder/player) and Sonic RecordNow must be requested separately.

Can you not just use an updated version of PowerDVD and Nero? Or do they have to be specifically from Dell? Are they compatible with MediaDirect?

    Thanks again

You don't have to use the OEM software at all, but you can request them from Dell and they should be free. I requested them and don't use them, but I've got them should I ever need to restore the notebook to as close to its shipped state as possible.

Without something like PowerDVD your notebook will lack a DVD encoder.

I use Nero 6.6 instead of RecordNow.

    Thanks mate.

As I've already got a copy of PowerDVD and Nero I don't need to request a copy off Dell and can format my laptop straight away.

AFAIK, you should be able to use your version of PowerDVD. There have been reports of problems with MediaDirect, but I don't see why there would be a problem since MediaDirect and Dell Media Experience (which you will need to request from Dell if you have XP Pro or Home) are produced by Cyberlink.
