do i need to get a surge protector for my laptop when i have it plugged in to the wall with my adapter, or does the adapter itself protect the laptop from power surges?

I would use a surge protector whenever possible, cheap easy insurance, heres a link to a travel one,

not necessarily the best, just the first hit in a search, but it gives you an idea of what to look for, they also have ones that will fit between the cord and the power brick. That particular one probably wont work with youtr model, it wouldnt fit my m1210 anyway, but as above, gives you an idea of your options.

Anytime, If you get an inline, I think you will need 2 prong C8 style connectors. Thats what the E1505 and M1210 use anyway.
Powersurge protector or adapter
