    Hi there,

Have read all the archived forums here and got as much info as possible but I am still confused! I was going to buy thr Latitude 630 but at the last minute, Dell recommended the M65 to me and I really cannot choose between the two. And virtually identical specs, the M65 is coming out about 100 pounds more expensive.

Can anyone explain simply the main differences? Are they both on exactly the same chassis? Is the only difference in the graphics card (one has the quadro FX350, the other has the nvs 135m)? One thing I am keen to avoid is the apparently poor quality, single mono speaker on the Latitude 630. Do you know if it is the same speaker on the M65? I know the limitations of notebook speakers but I do like to have a minimum of sound quality...

Any help would be hugely appreciated!

    Thanks in advance.

    Nick

First of all, the M65 is a last generation 15.4" notebook, while the D630 is a current generation 14.1" notebook.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Even though the m65 is an older unit, is the chassis and config fundamentally the same (although i do realise they are not the same size). Would you rule out the m65 on age?

Yes, the chassis is fundamentally the same, just larger on the M65. And yes, I would rule out the M65 based on age, if you want the larger size I'd get an M4300 or a D830.

Thanks again. I must say i'm a bit confused because the guy at dell said the precision range is the absolute top of what they have to offer. Do you happen to know about the speakers on the latitude 630? Are they the rubbish mono ones i have read about or are they any better? Would the m65 have different ones? Thanks

Business laptops are business laptops. Speakers aren't the best on the D630, as I own one. It is perfectly fine for personal music listening in a quiet environment. For presentations, it is ok, as well.

    Best,

Thanks a lot for that answer, really helpful. I find the reviews so confusing, they say there is only one speaker on the 630! I think i am losing the will to live!!

I am so sorry to bang on again about the same point but i have done some more web research and it really seems that the latitude 630 only has one mono speaker and some resources suggest it has two stereo speakers. I'd be so grateful if someone could clear this up once and for all for me! Many thanks!

I have a D630 and am very happy with it. As you've heard, the speaker (I'm pretty sure there is only one speaker on board) isn't great. For me, it's fine for everyday computer use, but I wouldn't want to listen to music or movies with it. Of course, the D630 does have a headphone/external speaker jack, and if I've used that before to listen to music--and the sound is perfectly acceptable that way.

I own a D620, and yes, I'm pretty sure it only has the one mono speaker. The D630 is the same chassis, so I'm pretty sure it has a mono speaker as well.

And yes, the precision line is the top of what they have to offer, it's just that the M65 is an older precision. It's replacement is the M4300.

I guess it would really depend on what you want to do with the system. The Precision brand is more geared towards high-end graphics and video work - they're true graphics workstations. The Quadro FX card is proof enough of that. But if you are going for it, go with the M4300 - the M65's EOL already.

Also, if you're really worried about the mono speaker quality on the D630, check out the official thread. Check out what some owners have been saying about it.

Hope you this helps you make your decision!
