Hi,
I'm interested in the Precision series (particularly the M 90, and the M 6300). However I'm put off by what some owners have said about the matte screen option still being between 50 to 60% glossy (as compared to any other matte screen) I would be going for the 17" WXGA+ (1440 x 900) UltraSharpTM display with non-reflective technology (anti-glare) option, and I would love to hear Precision owners opinions on this . I can't cope with glossy screens!
Any feedback would be most welcome

Mine is Matte. No reflections (1440x900) but... very poor horizontal viewing angles. I can live with vertical ones but when I look straight at the center the borders are darker.

I didn't like the 17" WXGA+ on the M90, dunno if it's the same like in M6300 but I think that 17" WXGA+ aren't great in general like the 14.1" WXGA+ screens. On the other hand, the 17" WUXGA screens are known to be excellent...of course, personal preference.
ANTDOT, will you keep it? I mean are you fine with it?
Also, look at the 'Display' section in this review and tell us if it looks like your screen, since it's the same most probably...

And, you could run PC wizard and tell us the manufacturer... if you want of course. -
Dreamer, I think I will keep it. I am a bit too petty. It is an LG screen and it is a good quality display. The thing I spotted may be caused by anti-glare. It is a bit darker on the left and right when you look in the center of it. Probably most people wouldn't notice. Or maybe it is due to matte screen. Glossy does not have this problem.
I checked at work WXGA+ 17" matte and it had the same issue. WUXGA is gloosy but for me the resolution is too high.
Generally it is the only issue I have with it. I will write a review during the weekend. -
I think I need to be more precise in what I write here (sorry guys, I have never dealt with laptop screen quality issues).
Your link was useful, Dreamer, to understand criteria.
1. Horizontal angles are very good. You can see everything in a auite good quality.
2. The problem I spotted may not actually be a problem but the distribution of brightness that is different throughout the screen. I thought it should be the same everywhere. Can I check it as it was in the 8710p review or was there an advanced method to get such information?
3. Antiglare works fine and colours are exactly as they should be. -
There is one WUXGA screen, which is kind of strange animal as posted.
Otherwise, I talked to Dell's rep and she said that the WUXGA is matte...I asked her about 10 times the same question...
However, I dunno what they use know really.
I'll PM about something connected with your review later. -
The screen on the 17" WUXGA M90 is semi glossy but it hasn't bothered me at all. You won't be able to see reflections on it under normal working conditions and you'd have to angle the screen in such a way that it'd be impossible to work on it in order to notice it. Its just personal preference and some people are more anal than others. I think its a very good laptop for professional use. Its extremely sturdy too.

Manicamp, what about angles? Are you satisfied?
-
I just received a Precision M4300 yesterday with the glossy screen and it is beautiful. The glossy is not too much and I don't see where it will be a problem at all. I am glad I made the choice I did. My screen is a SXGA + true life.

Glossy don't have problems with angles.

Dreamer,
I am also considering an M6300. I have sensitive eyes. Dell offers two types of WUXGA screens. Can you confirm that the matte screen is the 17 inch Wide WUXGA LCD Panel vs. the 17 inch Wide Screen WUXGA TrueLife LCD Panel. My assumption is "TrueLife = glossy? Can anybody confirm please?
-
Yes, TrueLife = glossy...
However, the one they marketed as "matte" before wasn't true matte as well, it was "half matte/half glossy"... otherwise, it was excellent. -
Dreamer,
Thanks-
So to get a true matte for the M6300 I should configure it with the following option:
"17 Inch Wide WUXGA LCD Panel [add $159]"
To confirm this option is not half matte /half glossy? correct?
Thanks again
-
I guess, it will be "half matte/half glossy" since they probably use the same screen they used before...
Call and talk to them if you wish.... since I haven't seen the new M6300 yet... -
Dreamer,
Thanks. I talked to them... They did not seem sure - but, I will talk with them again and see what I get. Its tough to make a decision without being able to see it. Thanks for your help.

Mmm, it is always more difficult for me to understand the difference. Bldhound says that the M4300 is not too glossy (I am deciding between that an dthe Latitude D830 which is not True life), and so I am more tranquill, but other people say that they will never use glossy.
Why? -
I guess I had to take the M4300 with WSXGA+ glossy.
My D830 has got the terrible (believe me, its fame is true, it is really awful) WSXGA+ SEC3350 Samsung.
In italy if one buys as business he has got not return policy. I did so.
But finally i was able to be contacted by Escalation. Return policy is for "no reason". You have not to explain. But in my case I had a real problem. They had to solve it. But Custome Care here is really bad.
Fortunately I knew an impressively good technician of Gold Technical Support. He is helping me a lot. Now, thanks to him and to a letter of mine, I was contacted by Escalation as I said.
He give me the chance to chooce another notebook, as they have no alternative screen on the D830.
I am still trying to choose between XPS and M4300, but I lately had many suggestions for the Precision.
So, very very probably i will go for the WSXGA+ glossy. I will take exactly what i should have taken first.
Precision series owners (M90, and M6300) please give your opinions on the glossiness of the screen!
