How accurate are the preliminary shipping dates posted when you are customizing a system online? If I select an option that may delay the ship date, is the estimated delay only a precaution or does it actually delay by that much?

Some options can delay it by that much. However, the estimated shipping date is normally over exaggerated; I've always got my Dell laptops about a week before that date. However, Dell uses it to manage customer expectations, and as such it is possible that you wont get it before then.

Rule of thumb is, if you can't wait for a machine, you need to be buying pre-made or retail. If you want a machine built to your specification then you need to allow time.

One more thing though: The option I was looking at was the 500gb 7200rpm HDD for the studio xps 16... why does it delay so long (approx 12 days)?

Because it's a popular item, or rather it's more popular that Dell forecast and therefore they are having a problem with supplies. Could also be that their supplier has gone bust so they have to setup another supplier. To prevent it from delaying it, you could go for the absolute cheapest hard drive and buy one yourself separately; they're easy as pie to upgrade. In the long run though that may cost slightly more (as you'd be paying for two HDDs when you only use one).

I was put off by the ESD at first but didn't really have a choice but to order...only to find my laptop delivered within 5 days :D...a full 1 1/2 MONTH befor ESD so yeah, the ESD is usually an exaggeration

ESD = 90% is always over projected. :)

It gives Dell a little bit of a *cushion* to work with in case of any delays, or potential problems on the production line with your order.

(I hope with my next order..I'm ahead of the ESD). ;)

    Cin ;) :)
