I've been calling the hotline every so often, and today I just had it. I need my 1420 in-hand on the 16th, because I leave for school the 17th. Dell says it's in preproduction, with an estimated shipping date of August 12th. That doesn't seem to make any sort of sense.

If I call now, will it make any difference? My order was already cancelled by them once for a credit card issue that I know for a fact doesn't exist. I'm getting very frustrated.

When did you order? I doubt that calling is going to make a difference. I don't believe in the whole 'expedited' order thing. I think it's just something that Dell says in order to appease angry customers.

I originally ordered early-mid July, and it was cancelled, without any notification, on the 23rd; I reordered the 24th.

And, yeah, I'm skeptical about the "expedited" thing myself for the exact same reasons.

I guess what I'm asking is if anyone knows how long the stages after preproduction take, and if I even have a prayer of not having to figure something else out to get my laptop at school.

I have called Dell every single day since the 7/30 hoping that they can make something, anything happen to help me get my lappy before the 20th but not one single person has budged! GRR. I've written numerous emails, have chatted with many reps, and even talked to many people in many different departments on the phone...despite my efforts, NOTHING!

Along with the above post, when did you order it? I honestly don't think that anyone is going to get their 1420 lappy until 8/28 or even into september... pretty much the majority of people have been pushed to that delayed ESD :( I talked with someone today who told me that even changing my color to black wouldn't help my shipping date... That's why G*d made these forums, so we can all complain about how unfair this entire thing is! its such BS!!!! grrr!!!

Anyways, I do hope that you get your laptop on time.. I'm assuming you don't have an appropriate shipping address up at school, huh?

EDIT: I'm going to be honest, I don't know how long the stages are, it really varies. Some people get their lappy shipped to them in days, some in just one week, others are in the build stage for over a week, or even in the boxing stage! As for me... I've been in prepro-F***IN-duction since my order date!

Yeah, I seriously doubt you're gonna have your laptop by the time that you need it.

I've ordered several computers (both laptops and desktops) from Dell, and I've always received my orders WITHIN 2 weeks. The laptops usually came about a week after ordering them. This has been a totally new experience for me this time around.

Preproduction shouldn't take long at all. Are you stuck in that stage still?

If I were you, I'd first decide if I could possibly wait it out, and if not, start looking at other options.

i was told the 1420's have a long delay still my sister ordered one 2 weeks ago she switched out for a 1500 vostro and hers in in boxing today within less than a week and a half!!!!! i ordered mine 2 weeks before her and nothing yet.. seems like the 1720's are backed up pretty bad as well only the 1500/1520's seem to be shipping faster (except colors)

I was looking at the Vostros today and configuring one for the hell of it. I noticed that the ship dates seem to be much better for those. Did your sis get a webcam? Do you think that's what's holding yours up?

I think I could get it shipped up there, but the problem is that I need it to schedule, and I'd really, really like to have access to my home computer to get things up and running. I guess I'll have to use my iPod as an external drive, or something.

I'm just ticked because I ordered in plenty of time, and now I'm going to get stuck with early-morning classes, haha...

this semester I have some early morning classes.... 10:10am is pretty early for me! lol...

I agree though, its going to suck not having a computer at school for some time! I take my lappy with me to class and literally take word for word notes of whatever the professor says! Uugh! I need this computer and Dell is just suucking right now!

EDIT: tremonti22... I was going to rep you because I totally understand your frustrations but apparently I have repped too many people in the 24 hour period, which means I was unable to rep you.. hmm... lol

Ugh, 10:15 was the best option, for me. I'd be more than happy with that; I don't think I'd survive 8:00 a.m. classes. I might have to borrow a soph's computer come frosh scheduling time, or something.

And rep limits? That's no fun. I appreciate the thought, though.

Welcome to the Club! I've also been in pre-production since my order date (22nd July), and I'm getting pretty tired of it. I also need it for school and I only have a little over a week to go!

i dont know why but for me it took from july/5 to July 26 to get into pre-production. It was 3 weeks in "order preparation" stage. And that doesnt make sense as my Credit Card was charged on July 5!
But on the Dell NL site they use different stages it seems. (??)

seriously, what the hell is this whole preproduction nonsense? I can't believe Dell right now, they are completely 100% frustrating the heck out of me! How can they be a huge corporation that puts together computers yet they weren't prepared for the masses to buy their product? Great job Michael Dell, you're doing great business!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (sarcasm). How could they not have been ready for all the consumers who are excited about the new line of colored laptops? Such poor, poor management! We bought the laptop at expensive prices, we're all making huge investments yet they can't get their act together and send us out our laptops? We want our laptops and they're not providing... they want their money for those laptops and we have no choice but to give them what they want when they want it. They should respect the consumer the same way and give us what we want when we want it! Freakin corporations thinking they're better than us!! grrr

:( i feel for ya guys,

Mine was ordered on the 29/07 feels like ages ago now.

A csr called the other night giving me false hope saying i may ship before the 10th. hmmm still stuck in pre-production. Christ i may as well swim the irish channel and go break in an build it myself. :(

My esd is 24th ausgust but canna see them sticking to that, to top it all off my hp dv6190eu self destructed on me, so i have to sit at work using my work pc which is stuck behind a firewall and cannot get onto my fav. site or nothing lol. To top that off i have an 8mb brodband connection to my desk as well which my laptop normally sits on lol. (I do IT support)

We need to get a counsellor on here and charge dell for it!! :D

Im wondering if they recognized some sort of production problem that they werent anticipating, like the "bad batch of screens" or "problems found in applying True-Life coating" - and they had to redo 50,000 screens.

I think most of the longest waited bought during the first 3 weeks, when they were first ramping up for a new product line. Ramping up like that -usually- exposes some unanticipated problems, regardless of the size of your company.

I just want them to build the thing correctly, and not ship it out shoddy or inferior, just to meet a deadline. Im mad about the delays, but I would be madder if it came and it was lousy.
