I just got a printer which connects to my laptop (XPS) via a usb cable. I set the printer up to print from Com 1 (serial port). I can't get the printer to print anything.

Do I have the wrong port? On a laptop what are the usb ports? (Com or LPT or Local Port?)

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

    Thank you

Make sure that you install the drivers from the CD that came to your printer or search online for them. You can't just plug in a USB printer and print. If you can't find the drivers, just put up your model and someone will help you out in locating them. :)

Almost all newly manufactured printers will have support in Vista and XP. For the most part, your OS should install a default driver. If it doesn't I would say that printer is probably outdated. You shouldn't have to tell the OS what port it is on. It should autosense it.

Either way, head over to your printer manufacturer's website and download the appropriate driver for your OS. Make sure you are using the most up to date driver.

If you are still having issues, post more details (system model and printer info).
