Hi, I own a dell studio 1557, I tried to upgrade its BIOS, it had bios version A03 and i downloaded from dell's support site the BIOS version 08

First, I tried to upgrade the bios with winphlash (the program provided by dell) to the version 08, during the process, I didn't do anything and at the end, an error window popped up saying that the error 200 happened. After that, my keyboard and touchpad wouldn't work, but my external mouse worked, and I tried to reinstall the previous BIOS version 03

when it was flashing the bios, the program, winphlash, froze, crashed.. and after some minutes, the screen gone black.

The notebook is still on, the fan is running fast and loud, but the notebook doesn't react to any command I do.

I'm afraid to turn it off but I don't know what can I do.

Please, tell me what can I do, I don't wanna to ruin my motherboard.

That guy had a similar problem but nobody answered him: Alienware m17x winphlash crashes when trying to update to A03 - Laptop General Hardware Forum - Laptop - Dell Community

A bad flash is a bad flash.

If it's hosed, it's hosed, if it's not, it's not, regardless of whether you turn it off or not. I don't know if it's possible to do a "blind flash" or anything, but I'd doubt it.

    Hope you're still under warranty?

This is for a Studio 1737, but the same idea should work on your 1557 - just change the filenames as necessary.

My warranty is over since last month =/

    Thanks Terry Kennedy, but
this model (studio 1557) uses which BIOS? Award, phoenix or Dell's own?
How can I discover it? I need to know that to try a recovery.

    Ok, problem solved!

I was trying to recovery the BIOS following the topic posted by Terry Kennedy without even try to turn on the pc, but, at some point I just tried to turn on and it boot normally, I checked on Aida64 and my bios was sucessfully upgraded.
So, besides the error during the bios upgrade, it worked well. Thank God.

Now, I wanna know how to backup and restore the BIOS with USB pendrive to ensure a secure upgrade.

Are you sure you didn't download a corrupt BIOS update? Dell BIOS is like HP, it's an executable. Many browsers will verify the integrity of a download.

BIOS updates are risky, if done improperly or if your download is corrupt you could bork your motherboard, and if you are OOW you are kinda screwed..

No need to backup. What you need is BIOS recovery in case BIOS corrupted for real.

BIOS recovery on Studio 1557 is very simple. The important steps are (assuming CRISIS disk has been created) disconnect the battery & power cord. While pressing the "End" key, plugged in the power cord, the computer should automatically turn ON. Details explanation can be found with the CRISIS package available at Studio 1557's thread.

BTW, Studio 1557 have Phoenix BIOS, not Dell BIOS.
