I seem to be unable to burn dvd's on my i9300. The dvd burner is from sony and I'm using TD-K dvd-r's. My computer plays dvd fine and burns cd-r's fine but it doesnt even recognize blank dvd-r's. Is this just a problem with my media or is there something wrong with my dvd burner or software?

Try installing the latest driver and see if that helps. Not saying it will but, maybe.

Windows does not need any extra drivers. Updating firmware and/or ide drivers may help. Definetly try some differnent discs. Quality varies greatly.

I had a problem when I had anydvd installed. Nero didn't know how to burn +r disks and some other odd problems. If you have any thing like this installed it could be the problem also I am not sure but I don't think the ms burning thing will burn dvds.

XP doesn't have software to burn DVD's, only CDs. That's why i think it is something in the software. Nero has a couple of settings you can adjust as well as Sonic does also.

I tried using nero express to burn a dvd but nero could not recognize the disk. It said that no disk was present in the drive and the option of burning a dvd did not show up

I'm not sure about Nero Express, i know the Nero Ultra has this, but under start-->programs-->nero, there should be a program called Nero InfoTool. click on that and it will check your drive, then pop up with a window that has a bunch of tabs. On the drive tab, make sure DVD + R, and DVD -R are checked (checkmarks to the right of them).

If they are checked, then try updating Nero if you haven't recently. I believe they released a version in the last couple of days. Also, try using dvd+r. I'm not sure about the sony drive, but with the nec drives, the dvd-r does work. I just tested it.

I use nero and have the sony drive. It is capable of burning cd, dvd+r and dvd-r but I found that with the driver installed it reported it would not burn + media and I think nero would not burn at all. I figured this out because I tried dvddecrypter and it worked correctly even with anydvd installed.

I would assume that if anydvd could cause this so could other things.

Also there is a firmware update on the dell site though I have had no luck installing it myself. I contacted the indians but they said it wasn't a firmware update and I decided not to attempt to teach them what a dvd drive was because I assume that after I taught them what it was I would have had to also teach them how it works. I just don't have the energy anymore for that.

i installed the firmware on dell's website with no problem. sonice record now recognize fuji dvd+r blanks (TY disc)/staples teon dvd-r blanks. i didn't actually burn anything. is OP sure that he has a dvd/rw drive? what's the device manager said about your drive? is it sony dvd+-rw dw-d56a? also with nero, it depends on the version that u used, make sure that u update to the latest version 1st.

I've probably burnt close to a spindle of disks so far, cds dvd+r and dvd-r. The sony drive is not the greatest it appears. Things which "support" it like nero seem to actually do it through some kind of discovery mode and some of this driver lecel stuff seems to confuse them.

There is nothing wrong with TDK (or any other media which you can buy retai)l, I use them whole the time, they are more time/scratch proof than any other I've tried actually. If the software/hardware does not see the media that means that it does not see it at all, no matter what you stick in. Updated drivers/software usually helps a lot, going for better hardware helps even more ;o)

Reading a little seems to say that this is not true. The drive seems to know what the media is (who made it etc) and returns something telling nero for instance. You appear to be able to infer this from the change log for the firmware. There is no xp software driver which is unique to the drive from what I can see. XP can't burn dvds. Nero has the equivilent of drivers built into it and it knows how to burn DVD via these.

I mean the rate and supported stuff. I assume TDK dvds are as good as the rest.

If you want to know who makes the discs, download DVD Identifier and you can find out makes the discs. You can then look them up on Videohelp.com to see what other users experiences have had with them. Taiyo Yuden and Mitsibishi Chemical are considered to be the best. The FujiFilm blank DVDs marked Made In Japan sold at BestBuy, Office Depot, etc. are TYs. Mitsubishi Chemical's brand name here is Verbatim, but not all Verbatims are MCC. Good Luck.

After reading your post the only thing that I could think of is you don't have any program that supports dvd burning. SOme of the earlier versions of nero only supported cd//cdrws and some earlier dvd media r+... If you get nero ultra and like someone said before use the neroinfo tool to see what media your program/hardware supports then that will give you an idea. In general there are only certain media brands that don't work with certain specific drives just because where the starting byte starts I believe. Also where the location of where the dual layer switch over are differet also between brands. Unless you tried to flash your drive with the wrong firmware.. your drive should work with the right program.
