When installing a My Book on my Dell E1705 an error pops up:

(There was a problem installing this hardware:

    External HDD

An error occurred during the installation of this device:

The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry. This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later. Contact your hardware vendor.)

The is not with the hardware it Dell Latitude 620, and it was able to install fine. Any Ideas? Have searched just about everywhere on the Internet and can not find any solution to this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

    Specs/OS/Have you reformatted?

I'm guessing you are missing a chipset driver.

    I have a Dell E1705 Duo Core 2.16 Ghz
Windows XP Pro (Just like my roommate)
    Yes, I have reformatted
But that was a while ago, Dell sent me a new harddrive because mine was defective. I have been able to add plug'n'play hardware such as JumpDrives and they work fine.

I was taling to mitchellk345 via AIM, and we couldn't figure out what's wrong. That's probably because I'm an idiot..but I hope someone else in the forum might have a bright idea. He has reinstalled the chipset drivers from the dell website, to no avail. This is installing over-top the current drivers. No success. He has tried other USB ports, not an issue. Other USB devices work plugged into the port. It does work on other computers, so it doesn't appear to be the drive.

    We're stumped...

    Little help please... :)

Which Manufacturer? The HDD is fine. I have tried to contact Microsoft but because the software was not distrubuted by Microsoft so there is a 29 dollar charge for there assistance... I don't think it is the Dell I think he has something to do with the software that is on my computer.

Check your drivers and see if you have any yellow exclamation points next to them. My mybook works fine with my e1705

Yes... Under Universal Serial Bus controllers.... External HDD has a exclamation point by it... That is what I do not understand... It is suppose to be a plug 'n' play device...
