So I got my new laptop.
When I installed my driver for my wireless keyboard and optical mouse, the cd rom drive makes really loud noises and the cdrom cover hums and vibrates.
secondly, when i go to see my cpu usage using CTL+ALT+DLT
I see both my cores (core 2 duo @ 2.0 ghz) and some times the CPU usage gets into the 50% range with no other programs running at all in the back ground.
I will dip to 0-1 and fluctuate there and then every now and then spike into 40% and increases slowly to 50%.
What gives?
does anyone else have that problem with their cd rom drive?
thanks

only when the hole in the cd rom is little off center dry another cd see if boise is still there
-
wow... actually it is VERY incredibly unstable while nothing is running in the background.
I'll record what its doing for you:
3,5,7,1,21,28,38,12,3,2,33,8,25,18,37,13,37,22,28,22,29,36,30,34,19,20,61,22,1,3,1,2,4,2,3,0,1 -
That is probably because of all the background processes/bloatware installed.
The other thing to consider, is that computers are a little unpredicable, they will spike and dive a little bit even when things are running great.
I'd recommend reformatting your machine, use this guide and you'll end up with a much faster computer.
Some vibration is normal with a laptop cdrom drive, but if it's shaking to pieces, make sure it's centered. Otherwise see about driver/firmware updates or give dell a call and ask for a replacement drive. -
when i play a movie, it doesn't make that vibrating and humming.
One thing that irritates me when I received it is that the cd rom sticks out just a tad bit from the frame of the laptop. does anyone else have this issue? it does flow smoothly with the rest of the contour of the laptop.
its like this _______________|---------------------------|_____________ -
Thank you very much. I'll start with the reformatting.
The Dell OS disk is the Red one right? -
Yep.

Please read the format sticky before formatting. There are some important to consider when formatting.
My CD drive is flush with the system but i have an older system than yours too. You might try removing the cd/dvd drive and putting it back in. Sometimes dell doesn't get it perfect. -
awesome. thanks southern girl.
p.s.
can anyone monitor their cpu usage and tell me if they too are getting some fluctuation as well? -
Here's my fluctuation:
0 1 0 2 0 1 0 1 4 0 1
lol
Which CD/DVD drive do you have? I had the Sony on my first E1505, and it was nothing but trouble for me. I then read of other people having trouble with the Sony as well. -
mine is by compact disc? is that the brand? lol thats all i see on the side.
keep an eye on your fluctuation for longer than just a few seconds because that's when it happened to me! thanks -
right click "My Computer"
properties
Hardware tab
Device Manager
DVD/CD-Rom drive
expand the [+] sign
Your drive brand is in there...

I keep a fair tab on my process and CPU usage, it really is in the 0-1-2-3-4 % range unless I'm doing something. -
ahhh thank you. It says Philips! Not sony...
-
btw is that with programs running? I have msn, skype, Avast pro (real time protection), stopzilla (real time protection). I'm fluctuating from 0-15%. Could it be due to those programs?
-
Yeah prolly.
Some of those programs maintain active network connections, Avast pro prolly scans everything.
I have Photoshop and Flash open, and if I'm not using the program, it only occupies memory.
To see CPU usage:
right click toolbar
task manager
processes tab
then click on CPU to sort by CPU usage
Shows you what each process is using and its memory footprint. -
Philips isn't the best brand in the world but you can get it replaced. Since you just received your laptop, you can call Dell and complain about the drive. Generally they will send you a new on with in 2 business days, and the drives are very simple to install.

-
Yeah, go to Dell.com and the support section. Set up an account and enter your system tag. It's pretty good about showing you what the deal is.

thanks schemula, I found out my warranty. 334 days left.
As for partition magic 8. I've installed the trial version but it won't let me finish because it's only the trial version. When i checked harddrive, it says I've two partitions. One with 119 Gs and one with 8 gigs that is classified as unallocated. Should I merge this with the other partition or should I just delete the whole partition? thanks
